It's honestly baffling that people try to argue that anyone did more than America to beat the Axis. Everyone else fought valiantly (except the Italians) especially the Soviets and Brits. We could have won the western front if there was no eastern front, but the soviets couldn't have won without the US. People often forget about lend-lease, people argue that the Soviets had better artillery and tanks than we gave. But people also forget about the food we sent, people forget that their troops and especially their artillery never would have made in to the fronts without all the Studebakers we sent. People forget that huge swathes of the soviet croplands and oilfields were under occupation and they needed supplies. People forget that huge amounts of German resources were being soaked up by trying to hold off America in the west and cover Italy's ass from our advances in Africa. Soviet industry would have been largely wiped out and they never would have been able to bring their capacity up in time to beat the Germans. The English wouldn't have been able to hold out forever, they were slowly falling apart. Probably the biggest thing people forget is that we basically won the war in the Pacific single-handedly. The Chinese held up a good amount of the Japanese army, the Australians helped a bit, the English tried but they had bigger problems at home; America liberated the pacific island by island before the Soviets even got close. America industry kept the Axis at bay, and our troops provided a fresh influx of power into Europe.

America easily did the most, but great creds to the British for keeping up the fight against all odds and to the Russians and Chinese for their great losses

The outcome of the war was already decided by the time the US actually got involved. The UK and the USSR did way more than the US. If the UK stayed out of the war or capitulated early, Germany could well have won, and the USSR's impact was obviously the most important by far.

I guess I'm thinking about it the wrong way. My line of thought is more about who was more necessary for winning the war. In that case, it would have to be the USSR since as soon as the USSR capitulates, the war is won for the Germans, whereas without the Americans the Allies could still have possibly won. I suppose this is wrong, since the question is really about who contributed the most to the war, and not whose existence was the most integral to the Allies winning the war. In this case, I would be prepared to admit that the USSR had a much lesser role and the US had a much bigger one.

Americans only came after the Japanese attacked them at Pearl Harbor. Before this event they were selling weapons to Germany too because trade was more important for them even if it includes the sell of weapons to an enemy.

Length of time isn't even remotely relevant. When you actually start comparing numbers like war expenditure, how many German soldiers were neutralized, how much war materiel was provided, etc. it becomes apparent just how little the UK actually did (compared to the USA and USSR; by any other standard their effort was still enormous). For example, in the 1944-1945 Western Front campaign Americans were 70% of Allied combat casualties and 60% of Allied troops period, showing how much their contribution dwarfed everyone else's. In the same campaign the vast majority of British tanks and about 1/4 of their munitions came from Lend-Lease.
