All Finnic languages are littered with loanwords.
Older ones, from Indo-Iranian, Proto-Germanic, Proto-Baltic are shared by all, with some exceptions, of course.
Examples: sõsar/sisar, kirves, kaula/kael are all Baltic loanwords.

There is a newer, even bigger wave of loans that is different in the Finnic languages

It is Swedish in Finnish
It is German (both Low and High) in Estonian
It is Latvian in Livonian
It is Russian in Votic, Izhorian, Veps, Karelian

Estonian of course also has Latvian, Swedish, and Russian loans, but the amount is much smaller than German loans.

It's hard to say which language has more loanwords, Estonian, or Finnish.
Finnish has weird stuff like "uniooni", but on the other hand the word "pot" in Estonian is borrowed from Middle Low German ("pott") [which is more common in Finnish, "ruukku" or "pata"? The first one is a Swedish loan. We have "pada" in Estonian but it's rare]
>>
>>75540332
I know nothing about that, maybe you are mistaking her for someone else? But if she is indeed married to a Finn then I'm happy about that! I am very pro inter-Finno-Ugric marriages!

>>75535992

>>
>>75540800
Yeah, that's a really interesting part of the history of Estonian.

We also say "hea" and "rääkima", and not "hää" and "rääkima", or "hea" and "reakima". No idea why only that sound change is in the standard language and only in monosyllabic words.
Dialects had "kiel", "kuok", "moa" or "mua", like in Finnish (Finnish doesn't have that last change, but Karelian does, afaik)

Frankly, any anarchist with a lick of sense opposes Islam and Islamic culture since it's based on oppression, discriminates women, LGBT people etc.

The idea of a not having borders already works in the European Union, and it's working well, so she isn't wrong. However, it's necessary that we share advanced cultural values and put human rights first and demand that everyone accepts them who lives here. Which the EU doesn't do well, and ultimately it will be its downfall.

>>75543143

How do you know that existence is meaningless? What meaning should existance have? I think the meaning of life is what we make it.

Wiping out humanity is counterproductive to finding answers to these types of questions. As far as we know Earth is the only planet with sentient life on it, so might be the universe's only hope of understanding itself
>>
>>75589024
>How do you know that existence is meaningless?
Evolution is entirely random, has no purpose. No meaning. Eat, grow, breed, die. The endless cycle. Individual specimens never matter. Only the species as a whole, and even then, only to us, humans, conscious beings, with superfluous emotional attachments to objects and entities, because we're prone to anthropomorphizing organisms.

>What meaning should existance have?
As individuals or as the species?
I cannot give you an answer, since there is none. There's no meaning. Pondering about this is a circular thought process. It goes nowhere.

>I think the meaning of life is what we make it.
If it lessens your existential anxiety. It matters little. You'll die. I'll die. Everyone dies. Then they'll forget about us.
The only question is, how long can humanity hold out. A hundred years? A thousand? It'll end in death eventually, no matter how far we try running from our fate. Not even space travel will save us. The universe is infinitely big and we're small. The chances of being wiped out by random catastrophic events are very high.

>Wiping out humanity is counterproductive to finding answers to these types of questions.
Not at all. No humans, no questions. Only silence. Peace.

>As far as we know Earth is the only planet with sentient life on it, so might be the universe's only hope of understanding itself
The universe isn't sentient. Understanding requires an orderly mind. The cosmos by definition is wildly chaotic. Incompatible with the human mind. Trying to understand leads to madness. The answers will always elude you.
>>
>>75590074
There is literaly no reason to kill yourself or the rest of humanity then. I used to have thoughts like these that plagued my mind until a friend said to me "if nothing matters then what the fuck is the point in crying about it?". That has always stuck with me because he was right, the only goal we really have in life is to enjoy ourselves to the fullest and it's pointless to go around being depressed about your inevitable death

>The universe isn't sentient
We ARE the universe. And thus the universe is sentient.

Also, you can't know for sure that death is permanent. Even if you aren't a religious person, you can think of it scientificaly. If you're dead for an infinite amount of time, that means there's also an infinite chance of your consciousness to suddenly pop back into existance. It might sound far fetched but you never know what might happen.

People can always try to take a """neutral""" external point of view in which things are affected by them as little as possible and then cry about how their lives are meaningless.
That only makes them weak crybaby faggots.
They could, in a pretty similar fashion, make arguments on how they're extremely important because they're stuff they are has existed for millions of years and will continue to, and their actions can similarly echo in ways impossible to imagine for eternity itself.
but they won't do that because it's easier to act like a literal baby

>"if nothing matters then what the fuck is the point in crying about it?"
There had always been at least one, but often times multiple God figures with humanity for as long as we had existed. With the dawn of technology we slowly but surely recognized that we're alone, there's no one to help us. We're going to have to save ourselves.
This caused an ongoing spiral of existential crisis, a shattering of the human mind that still continues on till this day. Without Gods we're lost. We have no boundaries, no future, no meaning. In a way I'm jealous of dumb religious people, because at least they have direction in their lives.
Most people who don't believe in God are unable to cope with the harshness of reality, fall into nihilism, which develops into decadence, hedonism or even outright self-destruction. It's just the way it is.
I suspect there's a biological mechanism behind this. Perhaps we evolved to believe in something. A grand plan. Something bigger than ourselves. A future. Something that gives us hope.
So we're depressed because we lament the death of our innocence, the death of our gods and the end of the age of wonders.

>If you're dead for an infinite amount of time, that means there's also an infinite chance of your consciousness to suddenly pop back into existance.
Anon....no. That's not how consciousness works. Why aren't there pocketwatches on Mars or the Moon? Because that's not how nature works. And our minds and consciousnesses are infinitely more complex than pocketwatches.

Estonian "nõges" = Finnish "nokkonen" = Votic "nõkõn" and "nõkõs"

The Estonian genitive is "nõgese", so you would expect the nominative to be "nõgene", which is much more similar to Finnish. (the /ɤ/ in the second syllable is gone, because of sound changes)
>>
>>75593689
>Are you ethnic Sami?
Yes. Swedes used to classify us as subhuman and they didn't want to interbreed with us, so we remained pure. That has changed in recent times but many Swedes are still racist and vice versa

Grandparents speak it, parents don't. Though Sami youth are thaught the language is school, only a few hundred still speak it fluently.

you shouldn't, those emotions are more often than not very fake, so if anything, expressing emotions a lot makes them lose value. Must be fun for a vacation experience though.

>>
Votic sentence of the day:

Taitaa viis kilometria Rütšümäld, siäl eli virolain Jüri kruntil.

This should be understandable to Estonians except for one word:

"taitaa" is a cognate to the Finnish word, which means "to know" (the Votic word also means this, as a verb)

In this context it means "about", "approximately".

The word "kruntti" also means something different in Votic: a farm away from the village.

I don't know Votic. I just have a dictionary and a document in Russian (izeõpõttaja)

It should be:
Eläv kala ujub vee alla [that final -b in "ujub" is sketchy. It's sometimes "ujup" or "ujuB"]
>>
>>75595646
Actually:
Elävä kala ujub vee alla
is more correct. Votic usually doesn't have an apocope like Estonian and Võro do.
>>
Another sentence that illustrates the really big Russian influence in Votic:

Kata tšiin obraza, štoby jumala eb nätšeiz

In Estonian:
Kata kinni ikoon, et jumal ei näeks

In English:
Cover the icon, so that god wouldn't see (whatever you're about to do)

"obraza" is a loan from Russian oбpaз - icon
"štoby" is a loan from Russian чтoбы - "so that"

"eb" is really archaic. Finnish has "ei" for the 3rd person singular and Estonian's negative verb is only apparent in the imperative (ei - ära)

The old form was "ep" though, as siin in Estonian "pole" - from original "ep ole", compare modern "ei ole" (is not)

Also, Votic has a change where /k/ before front vowels turns into /tʃ/. The exact same change happened in Italian, coming from Latin.

So, Votic has "tšülä", Finnish has "kylä" (külä), and Estonian has "küla". (meaning "village")
>>
>>75595717
OK, aitäh!
>>
>>75596408
Also, that other sentence should be:
Tšivessä veriin õli vävüü tšäsi

The elative plural is also "tšivilöissä", not sure exactly.
>>
>>75596943
The plural should be "tšivilöissä".

"tšivessä" is the singular.
>>
>>75597022
That phrase was in Wikipedia only in Finnish and Hungarian. The Finnish 'kivistä' is singular, right? But the Hungarian 'kövektől' is plurar. So I made the Estonian also plurar, thinking that it would be more logical. And maybe the Finn 'kivistä' has a wider meaning than just one kivi... I am not sure about that.
>>
>>75597378
Kivistä means "from stones", kivestä would be the singular.
>>
>when other anons post such complicated words concerning language and stuff

Kivistä can mean "rocky" (used in context like "the ground's rocky here/maasto on kivistä") or literally "from the stones".

Are you fully or just partly Saami
>>
>>75597378
What's confusing in this word is that Estonian has the same vowel in nominative, genitive and partitive:
kivi-kivi-kivi

Votic has:
tšivi-tšivee-tšiveä

Finnish has:
kivi-kiven-kiveä

So, the singular elative has -e- in Votic and Finnish, but -i- in Estonian.

The plural cases in Estonian are formed weirdly, from the plural genitive.

Wiktionary states that the plural elative for Votic is "tšiviss", which seems more regular. It's not seen in the "Vadja keele sõnaraamat" though. "tšivissä" is seen once, but this seems to be the singular.
