I was only joking anon, please don't believe the memes. Our government is absolutely heinous, corrupt, and just like the previous communist regime, constantly stealing money and oppressing the people.
That said, I do wish Croatia was our ally again. We really did love you guys a lot :(
>>75517003
Yeahh... sometimes we were power tripping. Sorry. Look, I recognize things weren't always perfect, but you must admit you were usually handled with the kid gloves on, had more rights than all other minorities combined. Also our people got along really well. Still do actually.
>>75517458
It's small but it's one of a kind, which makes it invaluable. Do you know how many churches, how many beautiful and massive Sees exist in Portugal?
There's only one of those though.
>>75517362
>Are they actually that old? How many of them?
Yes, and there is a lot actually.
Gamla Stan (Old Town) , is one of the largest and best preserved medieval city centers in Europe, and one of the foremost attractions in Stockholm. This is where Stockholm was founded in 1252 and the first 5-6 houses were built. Now there is a a few hundred built between 1260 and 1299.
All of Gamla Stan and the adjacent island of Riddarholmen is packed full of vaults and frescoes from the Middle Ages as well.
My house was built in that period.
>>75515752
it's pretty comfy
>>75517503
Yeah. We also have pic related, which is pretty sweet.
Coimbra still has part of its original wall, an original medieval Romanesque church and a great botanical garden.
It's a fairly neat city, but I think we're often isolated with no sister-city rival our size to banter with.
>>75517630
I know, I was there for the queima for one day as well, it's something else a night let me tell you that.
You have Braga to banter with since the city grew recently, and they are some major Lisbon cocksuckers too so that makes it more enjoyable.

>>75517593
Wow didn't know about it. I thought everything there is older. I should pay a visit, I like medieval towns.
>>75517777
Weird. All my experiences with Braga have been with nice people.
Braga has the population to match ours, but not the historical relevancy (unless you count the Bracara Augusta days) to match ours, since we were a capital and major nobility centre, so they really wouldn't fit.
For a while, we bantered with Lisbon, since we had the University and intelectual/artistic elite here, and they had the money, but they've since took off in population and resources and we sort of got left behind, sadly. Fucking Marquis de Pombal and Salazar and their love for that wretched place left us all poor trying to save it, and now only Porto can banter with Lisbon evenly matched, really.
We're too special of a snowflake of a city, in a bunch of ways.

>>75517948
They are nice people. No one is without flaws, I guess. And I'm well aware, actually the first accent to be "mocked" in Lisbon was the one from Coimbra, during the times of Gil Vicente. Nothing irrelevant ever gets hated like that.
Instead of size, you should go for quality. Make Coimbra the highest purchasing power, richest per capita, etc. which is actually a realistic goal that would give it relevance to banter with bigger cities.
>>75515752

The problem with Coimbra is that its population is too fleeting, so it's inherently hard to retain brain power after the University, especially with all the University's accounts locked by the (((Lisbon-based))) government.
IPN and the Taveiro offices are still keeping the startup scene fairly alive, and with some big ones that both Lisbon's and Porto's have to compete with, if not in revenue, at the very least in reputation and pedigree.
I like it as is, desu. 15 minute commute to a clean and modern office is a fucking godsend.

I know that when I was in my Masters a couple years ago, I talked to the current Dean and he said that since 2008 that the University's revenue from the various prizes and research/consulting projects was locked from being used by the institution, and instead went towards things like failing banks and whatnot.
From what I understand, this is no longer the case completely, and they are trying to semi-privatize it so that they can be more flexible with the money.
I have mixed feelings towards it. Privatizing a Uni might be a good idea, but the fucking University of Coimbra of all places should be a national institution.
I don't know, I've been out of the game for a while now.

That's unbelievable kek, I can't see who has the authority to freeze prize money won by the merits of the University. And it should be, but you picked the wrong city for it to be deemed of national interest. Maybe try renaming it "Universidade de Lisboa em Coimbra", that might do the trick.
>>75518522
>Eastern European "experts" on American topology and geography
We're a bit ridiculous, aren't we
>>75518691
I sometimes wonder how Portugal would far with some more independent divisions a la Switzerland. Separated in 4 cantons (North, Beiras, Centre and South) with more autonomy to set fiscal/economical policies.
Maybe we're not rich enough to implement it, but I sure would like some larger degree of internal competition and de-centralisation from Lisbon.
I bet even Lisboners agree, and want their city to be calmer for them as well, and everyone would gladly stop paying for their metro.
>>75519000
That division would actually be more efficient than the current situation, it would be more fair to say we're not rich enough to afford the current situation. No (fair) competition within the country is a bad thing. Plus for every cacique created in the "cantons", two would disappear in the central government.
Unlike you I don't think Lisboners agree though, I think most of them would rather maintain the current situation.
This also reminds me of a quote, that kinda went like "Everyone who ever got freedom from an oppressor had to fight for it, for no one ever gives up their privileges unless one is forced to". A tad dramatic, but the point is clear nonetheless.

What do you want to know about Braga? It's definitely a top-tier place to live if you can find a well paying job.
>>75520138
I've been last month to florence with a friend, it's actually immaculated and very clean, problem is there's not much to do in terms of nightlife.
I'll live there for a year as an exchange student, i don't know shit about that city, how are people over there? Do they often hang out to the near "Porto"? That city looks god tier
>>75520270
I visited the entire North of Italy all the way to Rome a couple of summers ago, went to Maranello and all that, peak summer too (remember it was unbelievably hot) so that might have changed. But I clearly remember Florence being overran with trash outside of it's city center.
And holy shit, how did that come to be? Well, people are nice, quite open, you'll have a great time, Braga is a top choice for young people in Portugal.
And Porto is kind of my adopted city, as it is for many people born in the countryside who ended up moving here, so I can tell you it's not customary for people in Braga to hang out here, although that happens sporadically.
>>75520507
Maranello? Even italians doesn't know of that city. Are you into sport cars/Rally aswell? If so, you might love Mugello aswell, since there's the MotoGP.

We visited Italy with a family that is a long time friend of ours. Anyway, the father actually owns several Ferraris so there was no way we weren't going to make a stop at Maranello, and while I myself am not an enthusiast, no Man can possibly be indifferent to sports cars. And when I return to Italy, it will be to visit the South since the northern tour is complete, it will be all the way from Rome to Sicily.
>I won an exchange program thanks to linguistics knowledge.
Congratulations. You are exactly the kind of person I welcome to stay as long as he wishes.
>Holy shit, really? You're probably the first person that tells me so with such enthusiasm, other people don't know shit about that town and usually reconnects that to Porto,
Porto is bigger, but the one "advantage" is that it's a very international place, more foreigners than portuguese in some places..
I think places like Braga, and Aveiro, Viana, Coimbra which you will get to visit, are the authentic portuguese experience. Porto is not, at least not anymore. Braga is full of young people, it's an authentic city yet large enough so you won't be bored, and it's very close to the neighboring cities.
You should also visit Galicia at some point, the natural continuation of the region where Braga is inserted, which is also quite nearby.
The article you posted was a national scandal. An abnormality. Though I've met Italians here who say we drink a lot more and tend to be more aggressive, I would regard it as an exaggeration.
And about the feud between Braga and Guimaraes.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRTMPyzQSiA
Thirty second should suffice. It's real. It's not for old people. The problem is that the cities are literally next to one another. It's a case of "Out of sight, out of mind", humans natually give relevance to their immediate environment. The same does not happen with Porto/Lisbon because the cities are so far away.

It goes way beyond football. You'll see though. Although I'm giving you all this info for Braga, I have no problem admitting I side with Guimarães because in spirit they are literally a mini-Porto, only better.
>That, Santiago and Vigo will be mandatory visits.
There are many other towns worth a visit, Galicia is a multiple-day trip!
>Thank god, thought there were actual praxes between faculdades.
Not between, the praxe is internal of a specific Faculdade, although there is "competition" at all levels, between different Courses of the same Faculdade, different Faculdades of the same Uni, the only thing that does not happen is rivalry between Universities of different cities at the praxe level (not allowed), because there would be guaranteed bloodshed every time due to the alcohol.
Going to bed now, see you soon.
