What does make a city look European?

Old town center and "city houses" located around the center? Narrow streets build without cars in mind? Castles? City walls?

I mean some of the Argie or Leaf cities can look a bit European in their centers(although you can tell it's not Europe).

This plus prevalence of wall to wall buildings. Plus pre-modern architectural styles common to Europe if we're comparing not just with the New World but also Old World cities from different cultural circles.

Do we consider Poland European now? I consider them barbarian mongol halfbreeds like the russians desu

A dense old town and newer areas built using 19th century city planning with street cars and pedestrians in mind.

Hmm I think quite a lot of the centers is pre XIX century planning.Old town squares and markets are often still in their medieval shape.

>Old town squares and markets are often still in their medieval shape.
The old town is often surrounded by grid-like districts. Here's Prague.

Well Prague is a good example and a big city so it has a bit more going on. On the other hand Quebec has that as well but it dosn't look 100% European. I guess it's a matter of a bit of chaos in the looks and different style of building ornaments.

Ye, Europe is a bit chaotic, there were wars, and stuff wasn't build in the last II to III centuries but throughout, let's say, 800 or 1000 years.

Also I'd add specific looking parks, all the new world cities I've been to had a different type of parks.
>>
>>75490310
>a bit of chaos
The old town does add the chaos, but newer districts that were amalgamated towns are more orderly. Here's Jezyce that was a separate town and later amalgamated into Poznan. It already looks less chaotic than the old town.

Sometimes (like in Paris or pre-WW2 Warsaw), the courtyards were filled in with more buildings and structures. This is also adds to the chaos.
>>
>>75490392
Here's the infill chaos I'm talking about (Vienna). Prague tends to have greenspace inside those rectangles.
>>
>>75490392
>>75490412
Does Prague or Vienna have their medieval market square plan changed? A lot of cities rebuild their markets in the XVIII or XIX century.
>>
>>75490534
I don't know but take a look at Prague's old town. It doesn't look like a 19th century city plan.

I forgot about those. I mean it's so obvious now that I think about it but you never actually see those things.

I'll add one more thing:
- gates for horses/carriages between the "town houses" leading to the inner courtyard.

I just wanted to make a argument that all old districts around market squares are rather chaotic and only some of the cities got them rebuild.

Both can look european, so I guess it's not a factor that decides about the "euro" looks. Not that you made an argument about any of them, just contributing.

But it's not an "exception" in any way. Paris was knocked down and rebuilt by Haussmann too though not on a grid but some kind of a star pattern.

>What does make a city look European?

If it's inhabited by whores and faggots, it's European.
>>
Intimate cobbled streetscapes, quaint pre-1900s rowhouses punctuated by beautiful old churches and squares/plazas.

Imo the most European looking cities outside of Europe are Buenos Aires, Quebec City, Algiers, Montreal, Melbourne, Boston, and Montevideo.

There are also lots of lesser known colonial towns around the world that look very European, mostly in ex-colonies.

No, why would there be? I mean, it's a complete different culture with different people in a different geographical context. Would you expect to see Punjab-like cities in Belarus?

I would if Belarus were a Punjabi colony. Still, I guess that Argentina was too undeveloped at the time of its independence to have any European-style town already

It has some colonial era buildings and housings like the rest of latin America, no big deal.
But the topic at hand was 'argentinian cities looking european' which is completely ridiculous, but it's okay, we are here to learn true facts about other countries so no problem with being mistaken like OP.
