I think "fence" comes from "defence" so yeah they do.

So I guess a fence is just a defence against outsiders without the de bit. Maybe back in the day word fence was used for proper defensive barriers instead of the wimpy little things we have these days.

I would ordinary spell it 'Defence' but I must admit the spelling 'Defense' is a lot more sensible. In future correspondence I will be happy to accept either spelling!

Notes about that map:
Many languages in central and Eastern Europe have words, stemming from both "Caesar" and "imperator". In Russian, the word <car'> only refers to certain rulers, i.e the Russian, Bulgarian, etc tsars.

In Estonian, the word "imperaator" exists, but is very rare.

how come its word in EE but not in Latin Europe, what the fuck. We had nothing to do with Roman Empire even
>>
>>75473930
For people who find a hard time seeing the connection between "four" and kʷetwóres:

kʷ -> p is a common sound change. Look to Welsh.
Latin's relatives, Oscian and Umbrian also underwent this change.

p -> f is a soundchange that happened in Germanic languages. Compare Latin "pater" to English "father".

The Proto-Germanic form is reconstructed as *fedwōr. Compare this to Welsh "pedwar". See the resemblance?

Gothic had "fidwōr" also.

That first change is actually what seperates the Celtic languages.
The so called "p-celtic" languages include Welsh, Cornish and Breton.

The so called "q-celtic" languages include Irish, Scottish Gaelic, and Manx. (they underwent kʷ -> k, later)

E.g the word for "who": [in Latin: quis (qu = kʷ)]

Welsh: pwy
Breton: piv
Irish: cé
Scottish Gaelic: cò

>>75474359
I know we're small and all, but whereas the common folk may refer to Jews as žid, doing so in writing is the equivalent of kike in English.
>>
>>75474188
The word used in the Romance languages and Greek is the original one, since there, bears are much more rare, and there was no taboo.

Lithuanian apparently has the word "irštva" stemming from this root, meaning "bear's den"
>>

>>
>>75474584
Apparently it originally just meant "berry". "jagoda" in Russian f.e means exactly that.
The meaning of "strawberry" is also seen in the South Slavic languages, and Slovakian.
>>
>>75474746
It's actually still the generic term for berry, besides being the term for strawberry, at least in my lang (and in BSH as well, I'd imagine).
>>
>>75474584
Wait strawberry is not jahoda in Czech?
>>
>>75474958
No, he meant that the meaning of the word can't be explained from its components unlike in Germanic languages. This is very common in Slavic languages, words with roots whose meanings have changed so much as to be unrecognisable to modern speakers.
