Not a single general saw what was waiting for them in the war. And the French were the first ones to use tanks in the war after the british afaik.

There seems to be potential a translation error on my side. I was referring to the tactic which includes close communication between infantry and artillery to gain some ground on the front. Which first happened under the lead of Robert Nivelle in the Fall of 1915.


My source states that the first creeping barrage (there are lots of very close terms in the German language btw) was executed by the Franco-British troops in the battle of Loos,September 1915.

But I have lot's of different results after looking that shit up in 3 different languages, I'll post again when I have more insight.

Lot's of German documents with informations regarding WW1 got destroyed in WW2, so that we can only guess how and why certain decisions got made. One of the more popular examples is the battle of Verdun, most of the decisions and hard facts from the German view of things are a complete mistery nowadays. We have no actual idea how the military was reasoning with things and we can only estimate shit in a very vague manner, which is extremely annoying when you are interested to learn something about those cruel times.

During the Battle of France, France actually had more (and better) tanks and guns then Germany, as well as a paper advantage in manpower. Yet Germany crushed them completely in six weeks. Also Russia only collapsed in Civil War in the first place because Germany was beating them so badly, the casualty rate in WW1 was something like 4-5 Russian for every 1 German.

Well yeah, they lost against France+UK+USA in 1918 and the USSR+USA+UK in 1945, but that doesn't mean they didn't beat France and Russia badly in earlier wars. I guess you can debate in the case of e.g. Poland because they never formally surrendered to Germany and were fighting them constantly until the Germans signed their surrender; but Russia in 1918 and France in 1940 seem like pretty clear-cut losers of their wars against Germany.

Example for the leadership/strategy: Originally USA was isolationist. Germany was raping the fuck out of Europe. USA was on the fence dealing with both sides (some prominent men like the Fords actually voiced support for Germany). However, Britain started paying more and more to us with their royal fund (mostly gold) and the started borrowing more and more. At some point, the USA realized it was in it's own interest that it backed Britain or else it would lose lots and lots of money if they lost as the Germans didn't blow their all their gold and took on massive debts.

Example for military: one time they had a co-ordinated assault on a Japanese held island with the Aussies. They set a time to attack (say 6am). Then they attacked and took the island. The Australians suffered massive casualties while the Brits had little to none. The reason why? Not because the Brits were great soldiers like their stories would tell, but because they waited on purpose for the Australians to attack first from one side of the island. While the Japanese rushed to respond to the attack they attacked their then weakened side of the island.

Point remains that Russia was going nowhere fast against the Germans and that the civil war wouldn't have happened if they hadn't lost nearly 10 million men killed/captured/maimed to the Germans and Austro-Hungarians in less than four years. I never said it did matter, in fact I'm of the opinion that Germany's "underdog" status in both world wars is highly overstated. In the second one they took two years to fail to beat a foe (USSR) with a third their GDP and something like a quarter of their steel and coal production. Then when their enemy was able to apply a similar materiel advantage against them (resurgent USSR backed by Lend-Lease + direct military intervention from the USA) they were utterly crushed in non-stop one-sided beatdown campaigns.
