From the sound of it, the CPI-M is fairly arbitrary in its distribution of violence to persons even suspected of being government informants.

The impression I've gotten is that the CPI-M leadership is comprised almost entirely of affluent or educated urbanites who are following the Red Book almost to a letter. Most of their grievances seem to be against state institutions and social systems rather than with individual foreigners.

I'd like to compile a proper book or novel about India but feel I need see more of the country before even trying. While I've visited a number of times, most of my trips have been more or less confined to large urban areas like Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and Kolkata

I read a fictional work some time ago that described tracts of rural North India as "The Darkness."

From everything I can gather about the region, it's an apt description - most Indians I know, whether online or in person, are oblivious about what life is like for the working class and peasantry in the countryside unless they themselves came from a lower-income family.

Makes me want to see all that for myself instead of relying on the sort of "Jai Hind!" / "Economic Superpower!" shit I find online.
