I've only been there as a tourist.

The touristy area along the river Seine is absolutely beautiful. Honestly, it's probably the nicest city center that I've ever visited, and I'm a fairly well-traveled Burger. On the other hand, I drove through Northern Paris on the way to the airport and it was a 3rd world hell-hole. Even worse than some of the shittier neighborhoods that you'll find in the US.

If you want to be a regular tourist and see the tower and have a coffee nearby its fine, if you want to explore the city on foot its definitely a city to avoid

I haven't been to Detroit. I'm a Califag. We don't have nearly as many Blacks as the Eastern half of the US. But I would say that the worst neighborhoods in California (South Los Angeles, the bad parts of Oakland, San Bernardino, etc), are not as bad the northern outskirts of Paris.

Point being, Paris is absolutely beautiful, 10/10 along the river. But like any large cities, it has it's good and bad sides.
