Were the Franks German or French?

They were a Germanic language speaking tribe located in Northeast France/Belgium/Netherlands/West Germany.
Trying to impose modern nationalities on them is a futile effort and only done by the worst kind of "we wuz" posters.

The Salian Franks that conquered Gaul and the Merovingian kings were originally Dutch, but later settled in Belgium.
