She could've used やらなかった here right? How does なかった differ from ていない in terms of nuance, beside the obvious "did not" vs "have not?"

The reason I ask is because it seems kind of weird to me that she's using ていない when "giving an ice cream" is a short, one-time action. It seems like やらなかった would be more natural to me and if someone could explain why that's not used here, I'd greatly appreciate it

ヤンダ is thanking よつば for giving him (some of) her ice cream. To this, よつば responds with やってねー (ねー = ない), using the て form as it is a resultant state which remains in the same manner.
To explain, the (っ)ている tense form differs from what you may be used to in English. Here, やらなかった would mean that she didn't give it to him, complete past tense action. Think the difference between she hasn't done it and she didn't do it. The latter is a static (non) event, whereas the former is an event which exists in a continual state: she didn't do it (at the time) which remains that way.
An easier way to visualise this is with a different verb but the same form. In Japanese, a fallen leaf which remains in the state of being a fallen leaf is
>葉が落ちている
Which means that there is a fallen leaf (which remains in the state of being there on the ground, a fallen leaf).
>葉が落ちた
Also means "a leaf has fallen" but it is a static, completed action which does not imply that the leaf remains there on the ground. It is a past action but there is no insinuation of continuity. The leaf may have fallen but it may also have later been stepped on or picked up, etc.

hey guys living in the states. Always wanted to move to japan I like anime and the culture street drifting night life sounds cool as hell also.
How would I even go about this I dont have a college degree and I don't speak japense. I would learn japenese before moving there though just so I could communicate. I wouldn't care about being a dishwasher or some shit but how much money do you think I would need?

I started doing Japanese 3 weeks ago, lessons are once a week for 2 hours. I'm to start working full time soon and hopefully save around 15k for moving to Japan at the start of next year, then work there part time and with a bit of income from my family. I feel like I should go there and study Japanese there for a year but I'm not really sure if that's a good idea. I wanted to really immerse myself into Japan and Japanese culture and make friends.

I completely understand the ちょっとまだ街明かりで 見にくいけど part, but I don't understand the 下の方 part. What is the meaning of this part and how does it fit in with the sentence? Is it the comparison grammar or just the normal meaning of 方?

I created a custom study with too many cards and can't do all of them today, if just ignore it will it reset once the day ends without affecting my stats? I looked it up but all the threads are old and I don't know if they're still accurate.

Is studying the kanji individually a waste of time?

I'm 4500 into a 6000 piece individual kanji deck for the common 3000 kanji, but it feels like every other vocabulary word uses kanji I've never seen.

It's definitely easier to remember the meaning of words when I can identify the individual kanji, but I feel like I just end up learning the reading of a lot of them without knowing the meaning.

Unless you're doing a holiday working visa, you probably want to know you are required to have about $26,000USD (2 million yen) in your bank account to move to Japan on most visa's.

The only real workarounds are the marriage visa or finding a friend in japan to waive that requirement for you by signing your contract as a financial dependent or something like that

There are also companies in japan you can pay to be your sponsor, though I don't know if that nulifies the $26,000 requirement.

How do you guys study core 2k/6k?
Do you check the card beforehand or you just jump into reviewing? What deck do you use? I've seen a ton around, like optimized pics and something, etc etc but aren't they all the same?
Do you write the sentences by hand? And is it better to go vocab -> definition or sentence -> definition?

background: I finished Genki and I'm going for Genki 2 but the practice exercises make me want to die, so I wanted to do something different to get more vocabulary, as mine sucks. Grammar is fine, though, I pick it really quick, but vocabulary is a pain.

If you really know 2250 kanji, you should have already stopped encountering so many new stuff around, I know about the same amount and it's rare to find something out there I haven't seen, and when it comes up, there is furigana.

Answering your question, individual kanji study is definitely a good thing, it's jut not immediately useful because you learn vague concepts. But it strengthens your understanding and recognition of kanji when you actually start to absorb vocabulary.

I started the guide in early February and was going really strong doing everything I was supposed to daily but in mid April I had to drop Japanese for exams and other things in life (this was my own fault for not balancing my time well something I've been striving to fix since I had to devote all of my time to exams for a solid 2 weeks). 2. Start kana/tae kim

3. After hiragana is fully memorized and the user has some experience in anki, beat Katakana War on steam.

4. Entwine katakana in existing study and finish tae kim / anki

5. After 6k core deck is complete Transition to "Remembering the Kanji" and get 10k deck which should carry the japanese learner to japanese proficiency as they prepare for N1


I think this is the best "Zero-to-Hero" method. Sure, hiragana and katakana can be learned in a weekend if you're cramming it, but I think for the average person that complains about the easiest thing, exposure is key, and the two steam games are really good at slowly exposing you to the elements.

Tae Kim was so useful. I suggest you cross reference what you learned there with other textbooks such as Genki 1 & 2. I've finished tae kim and now I'm going through all grammar rules from genki, it really solidifies my understanding. If you go to /r/learnjapanese and sort top, the have a google doc of all the genki grammar rules.

Make sure you're not overloading your brain with too much new material everyday. I did around 3 Tae kim chapters, making sure I go through each example meticulously and then screen piced the important stuff on one note so I can go back and revise it when I have time.
