Why would a small country like ours go to war against empires?

During world war 2, it wasn't like Norway and Denmark joined the allies before they got attacked. They both remained neutral until the day the Germans walked in.

Furthermore, Sweden would probably have ended up on the German side of things in WW1, and that side lost so I'm fucking happy we didn't do shit.

We could have gotten into WWI if Italy joined the Central Powers since there was a secret agreement with the Entente for Britain to assist in modernizing our navy, and we'd provide France with support divisions and marines to assist in an Entente attack on Italy.

But Italy went and joined the Entente instead so this never happened.

Netherlands: The Schlieffen Plan had called for a German invasion of the Netherlands and Belgium, but troops were removed and sent to the eastern front, so there wasn't enough manpower to invade and occupy both countries. The Dutch also had good relations with Germany and extensive cultural and commercial ties. Besides, Dutch neutrality was necessary so Germany could have an un-blockaded port to receive overseas goods.

Denmark got back part of S-H after the war despite their neutrality. They could have been greedy and demanded the whole thing, but settled on the part which had only ethnic Danes in it. Germany was reportedly heartwarmed by their lack of greediness and Hitler did not bring up the small territorial cession to Denmark in 1919 or demand it back.
