The roots of the two languages are different in origin so many basic vocabulary terms are very very different.

That being said, the two languages share some common ground with each other and mutual influences so they have a lot of similar innovations but they're still pretty different. Grammar wise, they're pretty close, but vietnamese tends to use noun+adj and chinese adj+noun.

It is interesting to note that Cantonese and Vietnamese do share a lot of interesting words that other chinese languages tend to not use.

Vietnamese usage of chinese words in daily speech tend to have a shift in meaning from what they originally were so its hard to see the connections sometimes in shared vocabulary, but there is definitely a lot of shared vocabulary, even outside of the Han-Viet vocab set.

Here is the thing with Vietnam, there's a lot of good things about it.
It has a lot of culture and history, having older civilizations than Korea and Japan. It has one of the earliest known female warriors who actually created their own state in the first century. And is one of the few Asian countries who resisted Mongol invasion. Throughout history, Vietnam is like a little warrior capable of taking down giants.

But now it's communist government prevents it from expanding it's culture and innovation. Vietnam can never be great until it truly has democracy, not some dictator bullshit like in South Vietnam.
