I want to know all about this cunt.

I saw a PNG flag earlier so m8 if you're still around, come fill me in.

Most of it is fairly unknown, apparently there's a large area that's hard to get to that's full of uncontacted tribes and shit. Add to that there's rampant lawlessness outside Port Moresby.
>>

>>
>>75092093
There's rampant lawlessness inside Port Moresby too, from what I'm told. This is part of what I'm curious about. It's also absolutely fascinating that we still have totally uncontacted tribes doing their own thing in 2017.
>>
I'm the kiwi that worked there for a year.

It's literally just a worse version of DRC or any other African shit hole.

Basically African lawlessness taken to a whole new level with the addition of a culture ripe with rape and pedophilia
>>
>>75092339
What were you doing here? What places you go to?

Got any stories? What were you doing there exactly?

Not surprising. The two most major cities of png aren't even connected by road at all. You need to catch a plane or go by boat from one to the other.

So much crime. I have started cutting out newspaper articles that have fucked up stories. Will make a cool collection to show and scare my mother with :^)
>>

>>
>>75092498
No, but I've been thinking about getting a gun here. Not for protection, really just because I like guns.

If you have a gun, I think you will attract more danger. People will jump you and risk their lives to get their hands on a proper handgun.

Ok time to make this thread my own!
I've only got a few articles so far. I'm not usually in port Moresby, and don't bother hunting for newspapers when I'm on site.
Articles outline:
1 woman tortured to death for witchcraft. 3 others are captured and will get the same fate. An organise l organisation is trying to free the ladies.

A big article on black magic and that it's real in png.

2 men with adult rifles boarded a bus and killed 7 people in a revenge attack.

84 prisoners escaped a jail. 17 were shot and killed, 57 are still at large. Brings the total to over 300 escaped prisoners in png over the last year.

Corruption in the upcoming election. Ombudsmen Commission froze rural funding injustices so candidates couldn't use the money for bribes, but all the accounts were already empty.

Funny story with this day. The helicopter pilot and I are walking ask over the plane. I spot 2 detached propeller hubs in the grass. Told the pilot i want to take one, he says "no worries, I'll have the other one!". They're 45kg each, the plane is on a pretty steep slope and the pilot can't be bothered carrying them up to the chopper.

Pilot says he'll bring the chopper to the propeller hubs, so we move them into a suitable position on the hill slope and he fled the chopper down the meet me. He lands one of his skids on the side of the hill and is hovering there and he has completely taken off the rear door for me to get the gear in. I turn back and see his rotor blade rotating less than a metre from the hill side!! Thought to myself this pilot is fucking mental, so I chuck the propeller hubs in, hop in and strap down myself next to the open door and we fly away.

Yes

One of our sites got delayed because a serial killer got put into jail. He was a tribal elder and told the guards to let him out or his village will kill them, so he gets to walk right out the front door. Same day he goes and kills a young boy. The people of the area are furious the man was let out. They start a week long riot, turning over cars, burning houses and luring shops. None of the logistics companies in that area would work while it was going on.

Did a site survey at mt dimodimo. Whole place had been ransacked and burnt down by the locals, for no fucking reason.
It was the only telephone tower in the whole area, so the town of alotau had no internet connection. Couldn't check emails so I couldn't organise my travel agent to pay the hotel bill. none of the eftpos machines would work do I couldn't pay the hotel on my credit card. The atms at the bank in Alotau had been smashed so I couldn't get any money out (it was a Sunday and the back was shut too).
I told the hotel I would keep email them and get it sorted later on. It's been 4 months and I still can't reach them lol.

Pic is the burnt equipment room on the mountain. Pic taken from the telecom tower.

Peru <33

We started running out of food on the mountain and only ate once a day until some villages walked for 14 hours up the mountain and brought us potatoes, bananas and a tree kangaroo.
They cooked the tree kangaroo by gutting it and roasting it over the fire with the skin and fur still on. The whole mountain stunk off burnt hair! Then they chopped the tree kangaroo up and boiled it, so the burnt hair taste was infused into all the meat. Fucking disgusting!

BTW, sorry I'm an engineer not an English writer so my storytelling is probably shite.

I was staying on manus island, where Australia refugee camps are. They have a lot of alcohol related issues on manus so it's been banned from being sold anywhere, besides the "hotels". (Hotels in inverted commas because they are converted shipping containers with a bed, toilet and sink). Because of this there were always locals getting pissed at the hotel every single day of the week! Made my hotel one of the most dangerous places on the island.

Because of the work I do, sometimes we only get clearance for testing during the night. So one night were ay site doing radio checks until about 12:30 before I go back to the hotel.
When I get there there is 5 drunk fellas standing at the base of the stairs I need to take to my room (my room was on the second story of stacked shipping containers). I ask if they've had a good night and excuse myself to go past them. 2 get out of my way, but 3 close in and won't let me through. They start drunkenly shouting at me very aggressively. Push one guy out of the way and get past them as another Starts pointing at my face and yelling "white guy! White guy!"
Say "I sure am" and run up the stairs and lock myself in my room, get my knife out and put the jug on to boil. I could hear these fellas stumble up the stairs talking loudly but they didn't try anything and left about half hour later. Thank god!

Crashing this plane with no survivors.

I was in Rabual working at tokua airport and had a day off so I went to check out the volcano that had destroyed the town about a decade ago.
When we arrived at the base the weather turning bad, but my Spanish workmate and I still decided to climb the volcano. We hired a guide for the two of us for the 2 hours round trip climb for $40.
As we climbed it started absolutely pouring with rain! There is no real path up and you're constantly slipping and sliding back down the mountain on the wet volcanic gravel. Our hands were cut up at the end of it all. Our crazy guide was doing this barefoot!! I could feel the heat from the volcano through my thick soled boots and especially when I had to use my hands to climb up the mountain, fuck it was hot. I still feel sorry for that poor bastard.
We were soaked to the bone by the end of the hike in the heavy rain!

At mount fala I heard of a lake near the top of the mountain haunted by "papagrun" (elder tribal spirit) so I really wanted to check it out.
One of our local workers knew the way there and said it's only a 15 minute walk there. It took a whole hour to get there!! It was the hardest trek of my entire life. There is no path through the jungle, we needed our machetes to make the way possible. We walked along on steep slopes though the thick jungle doing our very best to hold on to anything we could so we wouldn't fall. We crawled under tree roots and over boulders and fallen trees to make it to the surest lake I've ever seen. The water was black!

Sorry, I'm posting on my phone and most of my pics are on my good camera. I'll keep editing my selfies haha.

Actually I spend a lot of time around lower class when I'm out travelling. They're are generally lazy and only have 4 modes of thinking:
1. Thinking of absolutely nothing (most common mode)
2. Confused
3. Thinking of how to get personal gain
4. Thinking of how to fuck you over.

Gotta be careful around png natives. Even your best mate will probably eventually try to sell you for a dollar.

Is it true that there are still slaves in the Philippines? The Atlantic just published an article about an American Flip family that secretly owned a flip slave.
>>
>>75094377
I didn't read that as it is a sensationalized article (albeit true).

>Is it true that there are still slaves in the Philippines?
It depends on what you call slavery. Sex slaves are not alien to us, also corporate slaves and unpaid workers surface from time to time.
>>
>>75094330
It was actually $80pgk which is like $35 Aussie bucks. It's a lot for them. The average income of a full time working png native is about $350pgk a fortnight.
But everything is so expensive here! It's a 3rd world country with 1st world prices. At least in Philippines everything is super cheap!
That's the reason why ~80% of png still lives of subsistence farming.

Yeah I only really spoke with peeps from davao, and my filo mates in aus. Half my filo mates don't like him and the other half love him.

I told them I only took a couple photos, I didn't hurt anything. I told them I'm not paying and if they have a problem with that and wreck my system then I'll make sure TekikomPNG don't pay them their $50000 land allowance. They were very nice to me after that haha.

It's probably because they are poor and understand any financial gain they make will have to be redistributed to their families so the incentive to work hard lessens and the desire to one up a Westerner increases because they can get money and their family won't know about it.

There is no middle class. Only upper and lower. Upper class is mostly held by expats and native friends of the prime minister. Even upper class natives act savage and dumb.
Their infrastructure had progressed, but the people haven't. 100 years ago they were living in huts and throwing spears at each other. Now days they live in huts or corrugated iron shacks, grow marijuana, sell it to Indonesia in exchange for assault rifles and kill each other.

>>75094508
Haha thanks.
>>
>>75094559
Didn't make sense to me either. They don't work hard, because they have never worked hard. It's just not in their culture.

It's the same with a lot of tropical equatorial countries. Good grows year round, no need for planning for winter. Just throw some seeds around, she'll be alright. That's why "png time", "Fiji time", "Solomon time" are actual things. Relax, things get done when they get done.

It may have something to do with that but it's not the complete story. Tribal and familial institutions are deeply ingrained to their societies in that development into a proper state is hindered. Added to the fact that geography hinders any kind of movement between peoples reduces interdependence between peoples beyond their own families.

I would suggest Fukuyama's book "The Origins of Political Order" as he tries to explain why PNG is a dysfunctional state that it is today.

It's like they are their own worst enemy. Png has so much potential, if they could just get a couple things under control they could really start to excel in the Pacific region.

No PNG is different now because of the changes in their farming. Anthropologists speak of pre-ipomea the time before the sweet potato was introduced. It collapsed social structures, created big man rule and created vast overpopulation.

Famine was ever present and to this day it persists, you also have protein deficiency. Tropics is not easy, especially with all the diseases and inability to store food for long time because of climate

Sounds about right. This project I'm on is over a year overdue for completion. Will be fine hopefully by the end of this year fingers crossed.

A pilot told me a story of a missionary couple from America that lived in a really remote village for over 2 decades! They built a church for the village and taught them Catholicism. They even organised solar panels to be installed in the church so it could have light. They learnt the local dialect and translated word for word the entire bible for them.
Every Sunday they would perform a sermon and the whole village would be there attending.

After over 20 years they finally said goodbye and went back to the US. A year later they went back to the tribe to see how they were getting along. The solar panels were stolen, no one was doing sermons, people were now living in the dark church and the bible they wrote in the native dialect was missing. They eventually found it with stacks of pages missing, they had been using the pages to roll cigarettes.

Two fucking decades... I don't know if I should laugh or cry.

>>
>>75095021
Yeah. It happens in the highlands. Usually to do with occult activities.
>>
did you fug natives or something?
>>
>>75094875

Engineers and Scientists unfortunately aren't social workers. Yeah they may try to better society by providing quality-of-life-increasing things but beyond that, they cannot really change culture and political structures.
>>
just jumping in to say great thread
>>
>>75095074
Yes a few.

I'll tell you the most interesting encounter. It's a long story I'll try just tell the best bits.

My mate and I are out drinking. We be friend dine locals. One of the girls basically throws herself onto me. Won't let me go. We ask them to show us some other bars. They take us to Chilli Peppers, a dirty bar with corrugated tin walls. I buy a round of beers. The bartender didn't pop the lids of the beer bottles so one guy opens all our beers with his teeth. This girl is still holding on to my arm repeating "kiss me, kiss me", do i start making out with her. Start a game if pool with a local fella. I sink all my balls besides 2, while he has only sunk 1. He is visibly angry, he comes up to me and says "either I beat you at the game, or best you with the pool stick". I laugh and say "come on its your shot". I act drunker than I am and throw the game. He wins and yells "I beat the white man!".

I keep making out with the girl before I get tapped on the shoulder by one of the locals I first befriended. He tells me a lot of guys are angry I'm kissing native and want to bash me, we need to leave. Get out of there with the girl and meet my mate out the front. He is white faced and told me he thought I would need to be dragged out of there bloody and unconscious. We hop in a taxi and go back to the hotel, I take the girl with me.

Get to the room and fuck. I was drunk but distinctively remember her skin tasting yuck and sour, and I sucked on her tit and it lactated in my mouth!
Wake up in the morning, time for round 2. We start fucking and she starts saying "put a baby in me, put a baby in me!". I think it's hot and say "fuck yeah I'll put a baby in you!" as I thrust into her (I'm wearing a condom btw!)
She stops me and says "No! take of the condom and put a baby in me". I really want to nut but she won't let me fuck her if I don't take the condom off.......
>>
>>75095378
do you naturally have big balls or you grew them somehow? reading this thread seems you could've died dozen of times
>>
>>75095378
Cont...

I look at her and say "okay let's do this". I take out my penis and take off the condom. She tries to grab my dick and put it inside her but I stop her. I say "hang on, let me stroke it first" and start wanking. She tries to grab my dick and put it in her again. I say "Wait! Let me stroke it. When it's ready ill out and in and give you a baby". I continue wanking and dirty talking her. I start to climax, so shift forward so my dick is past her vagina and cum over her stomach.
She is pissed! "You stupid bastard!" She talks as she gets out of bed and good in the shower.

She makes me give her money for the bus and she leaves.
>>
>>75095331
>>75095446

I grew balls by living and working here. I was a bit timid before coming here but not anymore!

I'm also an electrical engineer, doing automatisation (PLCs, servos etc.). I plan on leaving Croatia and getting a job which would give me an opportunity to travel around, need to just finish my masters in July.
I chose automatisation just because of travel possibilities it offers, seeing pictures like this makes me wanna travel.
>>
could you ever post in
>>>/trv/
threads last longer, would have a lot of interest
>>
>>75095710
Cool! I majored in robots and automation too.

I lucked out with this job pretty hard! There aren't a lot of jobs that will have you travelling to other countries frequently I don't think. My industry I'm in right now is air traffic management. There's airports in every country so I have a lot of opportunity to travel.
It's a niche industry but a good place to start looking if you're into this kind of work travel.
>>
>>75095953
I know, I chose it because of that!

My major (electrical machinery and automatisation) gives a lot of people who do automatisation around the world. I need just to get a right job, current one is ok, but it's mostly office job and I also need to act as a salesman (doing presentations and so, not a problem but not what I like to do).

I want to see the world.

Yes it does.

Funny story! I was on manus island and was having a shit day. I wasn't in the mood for any more crackers and tuna for lunch so I l eft the work site and walked to the nearest kaibar (word for fast food). Kai/Kaikai means food. The only thing in the place that didn't look crap was the battered fish, in fact it looked pretty damn good! So I order it and walked back to the work site happy. I get there and start eating the battered fish and realise it is a complete fish, battered and fried. Still had the head, tail, bones and scales. Haha! I just laughed and ate it. It was all I could do.

I realised I didn't post any pics of native people. I've gone on my camera and taken of a few photos I like. I hope there's still people here lurking.

There are beautiful women everywhere, being able to decipher what the beauty of a people are takes time.

So while it seems like Papuan women "grow" on your, your mind is actually slowly cobbling up a definition of beautiful for a new people.

First they may be ugly, then you find some and compare their beauty to other groups, then you may even say you like certain things more about them than other people before finally you're able to find the beauty in who they as a people are and find certain women of all groups stunning in their own right.

Go to the Western islands and avoid the Highlands and Port Moresby. Sadly women are treated like slaves and are taught to be a certain way for men, add alcohol and urban women trying to find a way "out" with Western men and you'll have a harder time.

Austronesian speaking Papuans are much more egalitarian, you'll probably find someone who isn't so clingy or desperate in the same way :3

Quick story for anyone who still has tabs on this thread. Out the window of the hotel I used to stay at in Port Moresby there is a dirty, rubbish-filled creek. I came to realise one of the outlet pipes was the local bathing grounds for many papua new guineans.

It felt really weird, but over 3 days I would wake up and look out the window and watch all kinds of people old, young, man and woman get naked and wash themselves there. I was fascinated at their lives.

My apartment now doesn't look over that area anymore. This is the only pic I took.
>>
If this thread is still kicking around tomorrow, then I'll keep it bumped and videotape and post on YouTube a walk around the neighbourhood I live in. I'll try get a close up of the bathing area (if no one is there using it)

I really like that picture. The rivers are different colors because one flows fast and the other flows show. I didn't drink it.
I met a tribe there who says they don't drink any water from the river out of respect for the people that died there in ww2. Which was bullshit otherwise they would never get any water otherwise.

Do you have many expat friends there or are there not many around? Any natives you'd actually call friends, or just ones you trust a little bit more than others?

Second this. My favorites are the ones that show the contrast, a really developed looking area right next to third world huts and shacks. It's depressing but interesting.

I have a couple expat friends that work and I'm mates with the dutch soccer coach of the nation team.
I have quite a few native people I trust more than others and only two that I would want to spend time around as friends. One is a young workmate and the other is a driver I sometimes have.

The driver is a funny bloke and always drives me along shortcuts through rough areas that he's not allowed to. He tells me stories about how when he was young he would ride around in utes with his coastal mates and they would kill highlanders at night. He said he killed 3 himself.

This is neato. I went past PNG a few times when I was working on a bulk carrier around north east straya, and always wondered what it was like there.

Honestly everything I've seen makes me think if you made the people a little blacker and the climate a bit drier it would fit right in as an African country.
>>
>>75201710
In all honesty the majority of African countries seem much more developed than PNG. I'm pretty sure there are more uncontacted tribes there than in all of the Amazon, which is crazy considering how small of a country it is and how you'd think by now it'd all be mapped out.

Oh shit it's a PNG thread, finally a thread I think I can contribute to, hope I'm not too late. I just finished 2 years of working in Port Moresby and am glad to be leaving.

Seems like the PNG flag guy is having a much better time than I did, but I never went outside Moresby and I spent nearly all my time working. Hope he doesn't mind if I chime in to offer my thoughts on some matters.

>>75178500
This. But from what I've heard from the old expats and locals living there things have steadily gotten worse since independence. Like the Kina used to be worth more than the AUD and even the USD. At the place I worked we had a huge staff turnover and regularly hired teenagers/young adults. Lots of them could barely speak English despite it being taught in schools, although for some reason their handwriting skills and signatures are surprisingly good (better than mine at least and i'm supposed to be 'educated')

>>75200342
There's a relatively tight expat community in moresby, you'll see the same faces every time you go out to a social event. Some of the older guys are dickheads, probably something about being a big fish in a small pond or w/e, but the younger crowd are generally pretty chill.

sorry friends, had to go do stuff

>>75203043
I don't really want to say too much, but I officially worked in retail. The thing with working in a family business in PNG is that you end up doing a whole lot of things you never signed up for. There are quite a few family businesses that have grown pretty large since independence because they were around when there wasn't much competition and the locals didn't know anything about business, so the majority of these large family companies are foreigners (usually chinese or white). This has led to a lot of resentment against foreigners, especially when you consider the wages/profits they get against the national minimum wage of 3.5 kina an hour (fun fact local employers pay less than that but get away with it because they're locals). There's also a large philippine population that are brought in to act as managers because they're cheap and *supposedly* know better.

>>75203113
Hmmm well apart from the couple of stories I've already alluded to (they're not that interesting, our security liaison just spoke to the police, we bought them lunches and gave them some money and they went away) what do you want to know about?

Pic related is something that was thrown over our fence by the guys excavating next door. It scared the shit out of our security guard that was having a nap lol. It's called the land of the unexpected because stuff like this happens.

I heard that there is quite a bit of that kind of stuff around png, especially near Wewak but I haven't seen any yet. I'll be doing a big job at Nadzab airport sometime later and apparently there is a high chance of churning up a bomb. I'm actually pretty excited, I like that kind of history.

I know this place isn't good for my mental health, I've developed some bad drinking habits.
I spent a 2 weeks working alone in Nadzab and Kokoda. Because the loneliness and stress I started talking to myself constantly.

Yeah, I've heard stories about wewak from my dad and some of his friends who grew up there in the early 50s. They said that as kids they wandered around dumping grounds full of american equipment. Apparently there were things like jeeps and weaponry just lying around. Not sure how much of this is true though....

Hahaha, you sound a bit like me, the staff at the duty free liquor began to recognize me on my trips down from moresby and would always recommend some horrible whisky to me.

>>75208425
I think it is true. It used to be a major Japanese base but got taken over by the Americans. When I was there there were heaps of U.S. soldiers doing a recovery of a ww2 mass grave in the mountains near mine.

I didn't have any connections. My company won a tender for 3 projects here and I got sent over with no experience and a system manual. I had to learn quick!
>>
>>75208711
All over going from village to village. Basically just coordinating the construction of rural water infrastructure. I'd spend just long enough in the village to get the project underway with local workers then move on to the next. Some villages were okay, some were fucking nightmares. Had to decline illegal "offerings" multiple times, and was in serious danger several times. Would not go back to that third world hole.
>>
>>75208822
Fuck that sounds cool.
Illegal offerings, like bribes?? I never get offered any. I'm usually the one having to bribe people. :^/

Tell us about the serious danger.

>>
>>75208979
>>75209070

Never got bribed money because villages are shit broke, the "illegal offerings" I referred to was literally "here is a girl, fuck her if you want" kind of stuff, some of which were clearly underaged. Only really happened in the smaller villages. You have to politely refuse even though it made me want to bash their fucking heads in. You can't do anything to help the girls. Shit like that is what made me hate PNG more than anything else. They have no morals when it comes to treatment of girls. Is it better where you were? I never spent much time off New Ireland.
>>
>>75209211
What did they want from you in return for the loli?

Judging by the motuan tattoos she's from central province, so Moresby and it's surrounds. Although she does look a bit samarai in the face, so also places like Milne Bay (where they actually speak good English, so bonus points for that)

>>75208351
>>75208711
>If you're after action I think Lae has more crime than Port Moresby.
I hear that too in Moresby, but Lae people say Moresby is hectic and Moresby people say Lae is a hellhole. But I think regardless of where you go/what you do there will always be shit going down. The consensus seems to be that Lae is definitely more industrial though, but Moresby would have more govt stuff? idk.

>>75208822
that sounds like actual work. how much did they offer you? for some reason i'm imagining them offering you a few 3k flex cards lol.

>>75208979

Yeah that's what I thought about a lot too. Definitely not the first foreigner to come through these villagers, and there's virtually no oversight. I have no doubt some people in my position would have/did say yes.

Never asked their age but they generally looked anywhere from 12 to mid 20s.

>>
>>75209516
Nah, it's all good, I agree with you on their treatment of women. To me it seems it's basically ingrained in their culture, the women seem to accept it and then start offering those services themselves. I think I saw some article saying that like 80-90% of young girls in PNG have sold sexual favours or something. IIRC it was a tabloid, but it wouldn't surprise me. Low wages, high living expenses and a shitty culture, means it's an easy way to make some extra money.

Also after every fortnight pay day, without fail, our female staff would come in with black eyes/broken bones. their husbands/boyfriends would steal their pay and spend it on beer/gambling. if ever a country needs more female rights/domestic violence awareness it's png.
>>
>>75209581
Don't get your hopes up. qt3.14s are the 0.01%, and because they are cute they've probably been exploited/corrupted from shitty culture. If you can find one from a good (wealthy/westernised) family then they could be waifu material though.

That being said it's definitely a unique country and there are things to do if you're into nature/ww2 history and shit (not that I got out to see it lol)
>>
>>75209211
Ah that makes sense. Yeah the rural kids get treated like shit, especially the girls.

>>75209305
I given the leaders of a few landowner tribes cash or food so they stay nice to us. Did it in mt Hagen, and in Kokoda.
Bought a couple hundred kinda worth of beer and got drunk with the elder and chairman of a tribe near mt fala after negotiations to let us work on their land, after they chased my civil subcontractor away.

>>75209444
It's a good thing you never said yes. My south American subcontractors have admitted to bedding some village women while working in the area. They were threatened afterwards for money or to take the girl to port Moresby, or back home.
One guy had to pay 4000kina to get away.

>>75209516
Nah don't apologise. That's the way it is here, people should know. When I was in hospital for my eyes I saw a woman come in in a fucking wheelchair after her boyfriend did a number on her.
>>
How much folk religion gets woven into catholicism aside from the black magic shit that is practized in private?
Once read every tribe had oen gods and own storys/languages so they must have had differing moral systems based on spiritism too.
Or is it just "I fear the jungleghost he gets my gibs so he shall dispense gibs and make my enemies catch diaherra"
>>
>>75209957
I can't commend specifically about whether any of it has been incorporated into their christian service (like voodoo). But when I went there I was interested in the black magic stuff as well, thought it was a joke and made fun of it with the staff, like when I got a cold/flu I accused some of them of casting a spell on me lol.

Most of the ones I asked said they didn't believe in it and that they were good christians and JC was their saviour etc, but I think a lot of them are superstitious, it also depends where they're from. A couple of them told me it was true and that they'd seen a man turn into a dog and destroy trees (not sure why trees, they didnt either) and some woman from alotau (iirc) said that there was a lot there and she'd seen women flying around. You'd read stories in the paper about men claiming their kids were killed by witchcraft or that a woman had cursed them with diseases etc. But it seemed a lot of them didnt like speaking about it, even if they said it didnt exist.

Part of the reason why it might have continued to be practiced/reported about is that I heard that when PNG was colonized they originally criminalized the practice of witchcraft, because it was obviously BS and led to conflict/murder. This sort of backfired though because the natives thought if it was banned then it was evidence that it existed. Apparently this was why it was de-criminalized recently (last I checked it was still in the crimes act though)

I never went to any church service, but they seem to be pretty strict in their adherence to christian practice. I could be wrong though. And yes, PNG has one of the highest levels of language diversity and a lot of tribes developed isolated from others because of their geography etc. But in the city I don't think much of the traditions are followed, but there's definitely tribalism (highlanders especially)
>>
>>75192875
it already was lawless and violent, most of the fucked up shit they do like cannibalism etc predates european settlement

Port Moresby is what happens when you take a tribal people and push them into an urban centre. Their tribal mentality is what causes the problems.

Haha. This is exactly what I do. One of my drivers sats he does believe in witchcraft because if you believe in it you give them me power. He also swears he saw a lady climb a tree and fly off.

I have been meaning to go to one of their church services, just for the experience. But I'm put off by how bad I know the church will smell.

>>75211886
Good man, the place needs it.

I was reading through some parliamentary debates today for uni and they start talking about PNG there

interesting stuff

Hon RAY HALLIGAN: I have mentioned some of this before, so members should please bear with me. I spent some time in Papua New
Guinea. There were indigenous people there who, because of their culture, lack of education and, by our standards and our definition, lack of sophistication, were called many derogatory names. There is no doubt that people from other
countries, not just the Anglo-Celtic who were in Papua New Guinea, felt similarly about the indigenous people of Papua New Guinea. They would point the finger at certain parts of their culture. Cargo cult is one part of their culture
whereby they believe that their ancestors have gone to heaven. When they saw planes arrive full of all worldly goods, they immediately thought it was their ancestors sending it down to them. Why not, if that was their belief?
Hon Paddy Embry: It didn’t hurt anybody.
Hon RAY HALLIGAN: It did hurt someone, because they believed it was theirs.
Hon Kim Chance: I have heard of sillier religious theories.
Hon RAY HALLIGAN: However, there was some logic to their thinking.
Hon Kim Chance: I agree.
Hon RAY HALLIGAN: We believe that our ancestors have gone to heaven. In that case a plane just appeared out of nowhere, out of the clouds, and landed in front of them and all these things came out of it.
Hon Kim Chance: All the good stuff.
>>
Hon RAY HALLIGAN: I had a dream last night and my ancestors said that they would send me something, and here it is. I had no idea what it might be, but it has now manifested itself. Cargo cult was quite strong there. Of course sorcery was another problem. Again, like Europe, mainly older women were identified as sorcerers. Some men were identified as sorcerers, but it was mainly older women. When something went wrong, they would blame the sorcerer.
It was likely that that so-called sorcerer would then pay with his or her life. They also had a system of payback. Payback, unfortunately, is abhorrent. It comes back to whose turn, and I will explain this a little. Between warring tribes, if someone is dispatched, usually with a bow and arrow -
Hon Paddy Embry: Permanently.
Hon RAY HALLIGAN: Yes, permanently. If someone is dispatched with a bow and arrow or an axe, that is remembered by that person’s tribe and family. When the opportunity presents itself - that opportunity may be 10 years hence, and unfortunately sometimes only a child may be involved - that memory comes flooding back, and the people say, “It’s now our turn to have one of yours”, and so that person is dispatched. That tribe will then use its culture by way of payback to look for another opportunity to take one person from the opposing side. That is most unfortunate, because they are categorising and saying, “Don’t worry about the perpetrator. You just belong to and are one of that tribe, so you are as culpable as the person who did it. Therefore, we have every right to take anyone from that tribe, and that appeases us.” That was the thinking.
Hon Paddy Embry: Would they consider it almost a duty rather than personal revenge? As part of their culture, is it almost a duty, or is that overstating it?
>>
Hon RAY HALLIGAN: I think it might be overstating it a little to say that it is a duty. It became a duty only when people came together and raided the other village, and they might have killed more than one person. I spoke earlier about the possibility of a young child being the unfortunate person to receive that attention. That was purely opportunistic; the opportunity just presented itself. A person may have gone down to the river and been a number of kilometres from his village. Suddenly, there was a child who he knew was from the village that had perpetrated the socalled injustice upon his group, and that is where the payback came in. However, I am talking about a culture that is thousands of years old. Many people in Papua New Guinea who were from other countries looked down their noses at those indigenous people and, as I said, called them an enormous number of derogatory names because of that culture.
>>
I'm going to do part 3 at some point today but if someone else feels like it feel free to do it. I have nothing against edits and improvements to the first 2 either.
Talking about the thread crops in case anyone doesn't know.
