Too bad most elite grandmasters are excessively conservative and only play safe openings like the Indian Defenses in which they simply try to erect a strong pawn skeleton in preparation for the endgame. When you get to that elite level, it's like a paralysis overtakes you and you're afraid to try anything daring or out of the box.

Karpov is kinda the forgotten WC between Fischer and Kasparov for several reasons. His playing style is very dry, positional, and not exciting to watch, and a lot of people don't like him for having the personality of a doorstop and having been a creature of the Soviet system as opposed to Kasparov the heroic liberashka freedom fighter.

The 1978 match was a brutal death struggle, the 81 match was anticlimactic as Karpov simply buried Korchnoi. It was kind of novel for him to break out the Giuoco Piano in two games since high level players have rarely used it since before WWI, but I guess he wanted to try a different opening.

Another rare opening is the Center Game.

This one fell out of use by the start of the 20th century simply because there was no real justification for White moving his queen out that early. More common is the Danish Gambit (3. c3).

It's overused. Disgustingly so. Since after WWII, the Sicilian is perhaps the single most used opening in tournament chess to the point where you want to bang your head on the table if you open with 1. e4 and your opponent responds with 1...c5.
