Because when KMT fled from mainland in 1945, they took almost all the gold from private sector and national treasure, most of the high-level intellectuals and movable industrial powers to Taiwan.

They had a much better start than China during the post WWII rebuilding. It is true that Mao's CCP fucked up the economy and society. But you had pretty nothing to work with from the beginning.

Yes, this happened to other countries in the history. But some Taiwanese brag it as "muh Taiwan so superior to China" is beyond basic decency and common sense. Especially today's China is a economy and military powerhouse who can crash Taiwan easily.
