What connotation? It was mostly a diplomatic defeat, which is precisely why whining about who killed more of whom doesn't matter. It's the whole "for every ten of ours one of yours will die, and in the end you will beg for peace" attitude of the Vietcong that won them the day.

Yes, and this has been a major problem plaguing modern assymetric wars since long before Vietnam. People today are too squeamish and critical to handle what it would take to win that type of war. There was no political solution because the anticommunist material was too weak to work with and the US had no sympathetic angle to play on the ground. Bear in mind that US forces are still stationed on alert in South Korea for a reason.

The war was ended with the Paris Peace Accords. Which would have allowed the south to form its own government.

But then south Vietnam and north Vietnam didn't follow it and the US had already left per the agreement. US didn't come back due to domestic pressure and there you have it.
