My WPM in English is pretty low, I tested myself once and it was around half of what most people were declaring theirs to be.

Then I decided to test it in Portuguese and got the SAME results - the problem was not the language itself, but how long I take to let information sink in properly.

Japanese is fucking insane, though; try to watch some Japanese TV shows where they sub not only what's being said, but also what the colorful Japanese subtitles say.
80% of the time it's IMPOSSIBLE to read the English translation, I don't even get halfway through it and it's already gone.

When it's just text to underline what someone has said, okay, I imagine a native can get a general gist of what was written by summing the audio impression to it, but when the subtitles are supposed to add new information, there's no way in hell a baka gaijin can ever keep up.

The immediate next sentence (I think) says "Even for her, that is not an exception, particularly from the '84 album to the '88 album that concentrated on a rock sound, which caused enough impact and foreignness to her listeners to be referred to as her "Going Mad period"". And he goes on to talk about how she was being experimental as a folk artist by incorporating rock and digital sound, however that would stray from the idea that the "adventurous spirit" was lost from those albums, right? This is my confusion here; assuming my original sentence was correct, the ”それは例外ではなく特に” doesn't make sense to me.

I'm pretty sure it's not はぐる because はぐる is a 下二段 文語 verb which is usually used in the form 逸れる in modern Japanese (my IME won't even convert はぐる to 逸る, but it does 逸れる just fine).
The causative form of 逸らす would be 逸らさせる, so it doesn't seem to be that either. The obvious answer would be that it's the shortened form of 逸らされる, 「逸らせる」 but it's hard to find the potential meaning in your sentence.

When you're reading Japanese text written by a native there's usually no point in asking, "why do they say it X and not Y?"
Just accept it because they're probably correct. And learn to mimic it.

Is the nuance between こと and の here that の is more casual than こと? Or is there no difference?

I ask because I prefer using ことが for potential in speech and want to make it a little less formal if I can.

Something like するのができる does not sound like natural Japanese (I'm fairly certain).
することができる is more natural, but learning in which contexts ことができる or (ら)れる sounds more natural is a different problem.

Caffeine and a lot of time boxing to finish off those reviews. They're going to remain piled up until you've reviewed them all normally, unless you manually reschedule the cards, which I wouldn't recommend.
Since every since card has been introduced, there won't be an issue of new cards piling up and adding to the review pile. This will make the chipping away process over the days or however long it takes to get through them, a lot simpler.
