Akira, Fist of the North Star, and Vampire Hunter D were my gateway animes. There was a store called Suncoast at my local mall which sold import laserdiscs and VHS. I grew up watching Looney Toons and adults at the time didn't understand these movies weren't for children. I remember the night my friends and I watched Urotsukidoji. Everyone was completely silent throughout the film. I can't remember how many times we each got up to go to the bathroom before it was over.

Probably, Spirited away was the first japanese animation I've seen in its full version. Around the same time I was watching Speed Racer on TV
I'd say UC Gundam, but the story is retarded sometimes. I'd say Dougram if it would be remastered. I'd say Bubblegum Crisis if it wasn't so simple and its anti-monopolism was more scientific. So I say that the best anime is Legend of the Galactic Heroes, it's almost flawless

This was my first experience to Japanese anime outside of Speed Racer and Dragon Ball Z dubbed in Spanish on Telemundo (or was it Univision?) back in the late 90's.

This kid in my class gave me a bunch of VHS tapes his older brother got for him and although still not really into anime, I'll never forget the intro and the music, especially the music.
