Why are americans so poor?
They had no war on their soil for like 200 years.
They should be as wealthy as the Swiss by now

Microstates are easier to manage. There'll inevitably be some poverty and inequality in any large country.
>>
>>74699394

You are vastly understating the importance of the Civil War. Nearly every piece of important infrastructure in the southern US was destroyed, and any hope of the South being economically succesful without a miracle was burned with it.

As a whole, we're the richest country on earth, but that wealth is obviously not evenly distributed. Your average family in West Virginia or Mississippi is likely poorer than one from Washington or New York.

Also, we spend A LOT of our tax money on the military.

>>

>any hope of the South being economically succesful without a miracle was burned with it.
It was already a mess. Most of the rails used different gauges. The infrastructure was based around plantations and shipping of the plantations goods. The main crop was sold heavily to the British textile industry and the British cotton plantations in India would be ready around 1880. The south was inevitably going to collapse economically and had backwards infrastructure compared to the north. The Civil War just quickened it's demise.

The US is huge and geographically diverse, with some areas richer than Switzerland. We've had less time as a "rich" country and the larger your country is, the harder and longer it takes for it to develop evenly.

Switzerland is super tiny and they've benefited from a longer history and more time to develop their society's social infrastructure for their small population.

From what I gather, Americans are on average(mind what this term means mathematically) richer than many europeans, and richer than all of the eastern europeans. However, America does not have a middle class in which most are included. Even people with university degrees are struggling. It's generally said that the "middle class" is getting smaller and smaller. USA have a lot of extremely rich people, and an upper-mid class that brings up the average a lot, while a fuckton of americans are really fucking poor. There are more poor people than there are "middle class" people, which is pretty insane.

Take this with a grain of salt though, because I only know this because I know a few americans who have told me this(they all say the same thing tho, and they don't know each other)

American rich (15% of the population) are richer than Europeans

American middle class (70% of the population) is around the same as most Europeans, not as good as Nordic countries however

American poor (15% of the population) are on average poorer than most Europeans by a substantial margin. The absolute poorest (5% of the population) are as poor as the average poor person in Eastern Europe.

Problem with these rural hick types is

>A new coal mine or factory opens up
>Town is created beside coal mine
>Coal or factory gets shut down because useless
>People refuse to leave, cling onto their "smalltown pride" and refuse to move to a major city with better opportunities

its this dumbfuck thinking that's so common in these rural shitholes. In canada everyone's either in a suburb or city if you aren't a farming/tourist town/inuit or native. even the places that do logging or oil extraction still mostly has everyone living in a major town or city.

Norway is different, yes. But I used to think that america was a lot like Norway, which is how my confusion about this manifested. I think my previous post is a bit misleading however. I didn't mean to imply that this is only for people who went to the uni. People who have no degrees do also live alone in their own houses/condos. But like I said, Norway is not like the rest of europe, we have our oil and all that.

Food stamps are a supplementary program, not 'social security'. Poorer working people who own homes and work 2 jobs get food stamps because it makes it provides less of a financial burden on their strained finances.

Implement a Medicare-for-all program which covers healthcare costs for those who don't get it through their job.

Invest in infrastructure that makes it easier for businesses to operate in the United States.

Innovate new technologies and pioneer in fields like self-driving cars.

Increase the minimum wage to 12$ an hour and subsidize businesses that pay more than that.

Legalize recreational use of drugs and prostitution in order to increase tax revenue.

Lower the corporate tax rate so that corporations are more likely to invest money here rather than overseas.

I don't know about usa and italy, but here in Norway educated and non-educated people alike tend to agree with the so-called "populist" politicians about immigration. People in Norway also tend to view the term "populist" with disdain, because the word is generally used by journalists to put the politicians they don't like in a box (the populist box if you like), but the term itself has no actual meaning for the context in which it's used. A woman speaks out about how more immigration can hurt our welfare system, and all the sudden a journalist will say she is a "populust", it makes no sense at all. Norwegians, especially the educated Norwegians, see right through this folly. It's actually the uneducated people who more often tend not to see through it.

New industry: Nuclear-powered heavy-lift boosters to crack the solar system wide open. Until we get reusable vessels with 100 km/sec delta-v and a thrust-weight ratio of two to one, we're all stewing in this pot together.

Once that problem is cracked, we can grow to several orders of magnitude larger than we are now. The Solar System is rich, rich.

It is sacrificing the future for a short term gain that you think will generate enough revenue for other people to move in to the state and start their own businesses, history has shown this scheme does not work out. "populist" is from "people", or "folk", or "Volks" (like in Volkswagen, cars for the people). It could be translated as "nation" as well. German philosopher Fichte wrote about it.

This is what they claim 'populist' in some politicians, in order to underline the xenophobia in this view. It's a internationalist discourse, criticizing the idea that we are fundamentally distinct regarding our nationalities.

Lots of it in Europe today...
