After WW1 none of our cities were destroyed because the war happened in France/Belgium.
The territory we lost was basically only the ethnically Polish ones and the Danzig corridor.

We were not permanently occupied after WW1.
Soviet tanks crushed any resistance in East Germany and if someone had tried to establish a dictatorship in the West the US would have done the same.
