Most of the countries are strongly multi-ethnic with a whole slew of tribal languages. The colonial languages, however, are seen as "neutral" and are also understood by the majority of the people in the country.

Vietnam has some minority groups within it but is, by and large, a nation of Vietnamese. Nigeria, meanwhile, has got a something like 3-4 large ethno-racial groups (and numerous smaller ones) so they need a language to bridge the gap.

Basically what it boils down to is these ethnic groups were once tribes, thanks to the cuck ass Brits and French they got shuffled around, forced to live in different places and balkanized, now they just run around murdering each other

Because in Africa the national identity wasn't very strong. Egypt and Ethiopia are the only two african countries that made that and they still exist today. But every other other political structure were built in the last century and a lot of the modern borders aren't recognized by their own people.
