It is a Romanian speaking region that was annexed by the Soviet Union.
It's the poorest country in Europe and also the one which has preserved most of the old Soviet atmosphere of the late 80s - which is one of stagnation

Why Moldova is not part of Romania?

They also have a break-away republic, which is rougly 1/3 Ukrainian, 1/3 Russian and 1/3 Romanian ethnicitywise. It's called Transnistria. They still use the old Soviet emblem, have an own army, an own postal system, own license plates and so on.
