The rich in Argentina had little interest in investing in industry, because they got their money from agriculture. This resulted in Argentina being overly-dependent on exporting beef and wheat to Britain, and relying on British direct investment for things like railroads and factories. So when World War I happened and Britain all but collapsed, so did the Argentine economy. And they never found an effective replacement for Britain.
