Not a slav but used to live on rent in an attic appartment where most of the upstairs interior walls were wallpapered with corrugated fiberboard (cardboard). The room I had actually had really old wallpaper and wall rugs. Didn't have drinkable running water or waterheater though so had to bring water in buckets from a well and there was no shower. Had a pump pumping water from a lake for the toilet so didn't have to use the outhouse unless the pipes froze during winter which didn't happen every year. Wasn't allowed to flush down toilet paper though since it would block the pipes so had to bring it to the kitchen oven.
