That's not really the point. The idea is that the Bundeswehr should not look upon the Wehrmacht, which was the army that served the Nazi state, as a positive example.
I'm not a soldier, but I think it's a difficult point, since for once the Bundeswehr was literally created by former Wehrmacht generals and some aspects of modern warfare go back to the Wehrmacht. Also a soldier might look upon those people as ones who were in a similar situation to him and thus somehow feel connected.

What this is really about though is that the German government fucked up massively as usual and now they're doing some stupid symbolic action which will change precisely nothing.

A few companies still manufacture WWII style protective helmets for people in firefighting and heavy industrial jobs. I work at a dealership and we're supposed to wear these when working under vehicles on lifts. I wouldn't really consider these "nazi" helmets. They were in use 20 years before Nazi Germany came into existence and were widely used in Asia and Latin America too.
