The way i learnt english (and most people on the internet do) goes something like this
1.- Learn the absolute basics in school
2.- Start browsing the internet in that specific language
3.- use google translate ONLY if you assume the phrase/word is typed correctly without typos
4.- chat with native speakers
5.- use voice chat with native speakers (in videogames for example)
6.- get inmersed in a group full of native speakers in general
