There's history to this, b-but only if you want to read.

There is a prison in the far north of the country (which is where Iquique is located) that is called "Pisagua". Being probably one of the worst prisons you can imagine (located in the coastline in the far north and surrounded by only desert and the sea, making an escape something virtually impossible), different presidents through history used it as a concentration camp for disident,s pariah or lawbreakers (and yes, le free helicopter rides man used it too, but that was in the 70s and only with commies).

In the 50s it was used by some presidents of that time to put gays, trasvestites and other degenerates that broke the laws of the time in jail so they will serve that time in a place far away from good ol' santiago. The thing is that when those faggots where released, most of them remained in the north, mostly in Iquique. This made the city get filled with homosexuals from all over the country, which created kind of a "local culture". There's a shitton of gay discos and that sort of stuff in Iquique, and people generally don't seem to care that much if you're gay (we even had a lesbian mayor not long ago. Funniest thing is that she was running for the far right party).

As an anecdote, there's this ancient rivarly between Arica (the northest cityof Chile) and Iquique. Of course, this rivalry can be seen when the football teams of both cities have to play against eachother (but Arica a shit and can't get to the highest ranked league, so that doesn't happen that often). Arica has this chant that goes like "IQUIQUE, TIERRA DE CAMPEONES Y MARICONES". A rough translation would be "Iquique, land of champions and faggots" (the city's motto is "Iquique, land of champions").
