You can make it worthwhile if you include Trieste with Miramar castle and maybe Pula in Croatia into that leg of your trip. It's a nice, lush region without the scary tall mountains and desert landscapes of Kvarner, Lika and Dalmatia in Croatia where most Slovenes go on holiday every year. Istria also boasts a nice mix of Venetian and Austrian architecture. One of my favourite places in the world desu.

The Italians were powerless in 45. Keeping Trieste in Italy was Churchill's pet projects, and British troops went to great lengths to prevent the Yugoslav capture of the city (which still happened, but didn't stick).
