OP, here's my ranking

1) French (easy, plus Africa's population is seeing rapid growth)
2) Chinese (good for employment, however, it is insanely hard)
3) Russian (good for defense jobs, but pretty hard)

You can learn Spanish and Italian phrases just well enough to be a tourist. Everyone knows there's no future for those countries so don't bother learning them to the level of fluency. Germanic countries speak good English so don't bother with them either.

Everything is free but lately they added ads at the end of every completed lesson but is no big deal. The creator is from Honduras I think and he said the idea for Duolingo is to create free language education to or for people that don't have the resources wether financially or because of where they live. 9/10 app for brushing up on a language or learning just what you would need on an everyday life.
