better as in more useful? better as in some kind of grammatical feature one has over the other?

In Europe French is more useful, more people speak it, Frenchmen, half of Belgians including the capital of the EU, almost all Swiss as first or second language, and also north african, syrian and sub saharan immigrants who are quite common in Europe.

Romance languages are very similar to each other (except romanian or sardinian), and there is nothing you can do in French that you cant do in Spanish or vice versa except for Puns/Word Plays which are almost always unstranslatable for any language, and also the fact that Spanish and Portuguese have two verbs for being, Ser and Estar which is the biggest difference between them and French-Italian.

French also has a better literature, at least from the 1700s to the 1970s.

Also, IMO, French is easier after you cross the pronounciation/spelling filter.

Is there a linguistic difference between the Spanish spoken in the US and Mexico, and the Spanish spoken in Spain and every other Spanish-speaking country?

I feel like Spanish is actually a great language, but I also feel like I have a negative connotation against it. I hear about it being the second language of love, but when I hear it in person, it just sounds like shit.

Spanish has nothing on French. Hell, it just sounds like retarded Italian.

Spanish and French both seem like each got assigned their half of the Portuguese phoneme book.

Spain got the open vowels and nice-sounding verbs, but it's very hard to take serious because it feels like what Portuguese kids speak until they get a better control of their mouths.

French feels like it got all the nasal sounds and the harsh consonants that sound like shit without the balance of the softer and more assertive open vowels. It feels like valley girl to the extreme so it sounds so passive-agressive and bitchy. Like you're always stating a back-handed compliment.

Italian seems the same as Spanish, but the musicality of it makes it have a bit more charm and get away as playful as opposed to retarded.

Portuguese is a beautiful language once you speak and control it, but I imagine it sounds like slurred drunken Spanish until you get the different nuances in the vowels (or lack thereof)
>>
>>74184355
Portuguese sounds awful to my French ears, Spanish sounds way better
>>
>>74184439
I can understand that.

Which would you say it's the manliest Romance language? I feel like it's Portuguese because of the closed vowels and being very stern, but I can admit it may be carried by a huge bias.

Keep in mind that even our women have moustaches, though.

French all the way

French would be the best language if English didn't exist
>>
>>74184595

Yeah it's a shame galician got cucked by spanish and now sounds like siesta party.

Portuguese - s = x

Galician - x = x

you'll find this a lot in galician, but it's basically the same as portuguese.
plus, the r, ss, x, ch, lh and low tune vowels, makes us prone to speak germanic and slavic languages.

we really speak and sound like russian.

I don't think any language is "gay" or "manly"
>>

Italian - a bit gay sounding, but requinted as fuck

French - full gay mode, that's how it still sounds to me.

Spanish - childish, hyperventilating siesta party

Portuguese - Дeтcкaя, гипepвeнтиляциoннaя cиecтy

Romanian - Is this even romance anymore?
>>
>>74183766
such a french post
>>
>>74185718
Why is it gay? Nasal sounds? Too "soft"?
>>
>>74185766

It's the way you pronounce the L's and the words ending in "ui" often make it sound like that.

gay is just the word we chose to describe it.

It's an okay language overall, portuguese verbs follow a french pattern rather than a spanish one (I know that spanish =/ portuguese, and that they didn't come from one another).

The more you know...

>>74185766
No, we have nasal sounds too and if anything it makes us sound drunk.

To me it's the very pronounced "u" tending ever so lightly to the "è" and a lot of the words ending with é or è, which are fairly gayer sounds than a strong sound like the open "Ah" or "Oh".

The way you always scratch your "R" is also a bit gay. We also scratch some, but not all (half the time it's like the Scottish r).

>>74185952
Portuguese has an undeniable French influence. Also, like French, the main component to our accent is Celtic, not Roman, so that compounds a bit.

It just sounds very delicate and effeminate in a way. Like it's being spoken in cursive with tones of loops, if that makes sense. It'd be gayer if it had the "th" thing castilian does.

Yeah, took me a while to pin it down, but that's definitely the biggest component, isn't it?

English always stresses the first:
>STRAW-bry
Portuguese usually stresses the penultimate:
>straw-BEH-rry
French stresses the last:
>straw-be-REE

Obviously when forcing your own accent on English.

>>74186323
We use either varying by region (and even person). It doesn't sound gayer, but the rolled R is generally considered a bit less classy. But classy doesn't mean manly, I think.

The short Scottish rolled "r" is ubiquitous thoughout the country and it balances out the strong R, rolled (Spanish) or scratched (French) so neither sounds too bad.

>>74186379
I'd describe Italian as flamboyant as opposed to gay. It sounds camp, but playful and self-aware, so it's more charming that way. To me at least.
>>
>>74186323
>but the way spaniard make their R are way more gayer as they most use they tongue like if they were sucking an anus

rolling r? [r]
some people use it in southern portuguese regions, but with less gay power than the spanish people do.

the tap ins are the same for portuguese and spanish
>>
>>74186557
>southern portuguese regions
It's not a southern/northern thing. It's an Urban/Rural thing. I'm from the Coimbra and everyone in the city uses the scratchy R and everyone from the countryside uses the rolling R.

It was tied to class at some point (the nobles wanted to sound more French), but it's diffused to just the cities vs. countryside.
>>
>>74171684

The Spanish and Italian R is the same as the Latin one and it doesn't sound gay, it sounds like a growling dog.
Also, most Frenchmen still used it in the 1800 and there are plenty of recordings from the 30s of Frenchmen singing with the Spanish/Italian R.

The French R is a recent Parisian fashion that spread like cancer and sounds like you are gargling, like you put something in your mouth that is touching your throat.
