I have a very austistic idea for changing the championship for football, hurling is different as not as many counties play at the same standard, it's very similar to the NFL system.
-Provincials are now done in pre season, league is scrapped
-Every county is drawn into a group of four every year with everyone seeded, so the best teams are in pot 1. As an incentive for the provincial championships if you win that you're in pot 1. This will require some sort of ranking system to determine the pots.
-Groups aren't drawn randomly, instead groups try to stick in the same province to get as many teams from each pot to play in the province, so say in Munster Kerry could be pot 1, Tipperary could be in pot 2, Clare in 3 and Waterford in 4, that would be a group, and another one could have Cork in 2 and Limerick in 3 drawn with two counties from other provinces.
-In each group everyone plays eachother home and away for six games.
-Teams also play another six games outside their group and pot, three home and three away against other teams in other seedings in the other groups, with a guarantee of playing one game against a team in your province, so in the example above Kerry would play two of those against Cork and Limerick, and four against others, Cork would have a chance to play Kerry, Clare and Waterford and three others in their games, but can't play Tipperary as they're in the same pot.
-First in the group can get a trophy and go to the knockouts. The top 4 automatically go to the quarter finals, the best 4 runner ups go into a playoff with the other winners to reach the playoff, then the system is just a knockout from there, or if there's demand a best of 3 or if you really want to be American a best of 7 series for the semis and final. If there's an incentive or will from the other teams smaller trophies could also be used for the teams who don't make the final 12 via another knockout system. The rest of the year can then be devoted to club football.

I like it but that's a huge increase in games which I don't see the players going for considering they're all amateur and have club commitments. I'd love a proper GAA county season like that with 12 games for everyone before knockouts but I don't see it. Even the 2 extra games with the Super 8 was met with a lot of resistance and abolishment of replays in non-finals was seen as a sort of concession towards that.

Fine. Though again, there's no way there'd be room for a multi-game series.

Overall it's a good idea but wouldn't happen unless the sport went professional. The realistic version of this would be everyone playing each other once in the group with the 8 winners moving into the quarter final. Maybe the 8 runners up moving into a bracket for a secondary trophy.
