english wasn't meant to be overly complicated
it was developed as a medium of communication between many different ethnic groups living on a small island

No, I know, it's 100 percent LARPing at its silliest. But it's an interesting thought experiment, Old English had a rich phonology and some really neat things like kennings, it's interesting to imagine how it would've played out if it were left more 'pure'.
