Actually I think coup was made by Americans to topple Erdogan because except the Syria, Russia and Turkey have many common interest and are naturally attracted to each other. Also Putin is a person who builds politics on his personal relationships with others. He was always trying to make good relationships with USA in 00s because he had good personal relationships with Bush. Putin is twin brother of Erdogan by his attitudes and policies so he sympathizes him and he constantly is trying to improve relations with Turkey. Also we obviously have ton of economy relations. Russian and Turkey being allies is a huge danger for all American game in Middle East so they tried toppling him to prevent it. Shooting down the plane was a previous stage of their plot to do it.
