This paragraph has two good examples of the different てくる's we were talking about yesterday. The てきた of 培ってきた gives the nuance that the rhythm sense and melody construction was "cultivated" from the outside and entered into his mind, as if the subject is receiving something from the outside world. The てきたof 急成長してきた gives a sense of a temporal progression from the past to now; "has rapidly grown". I'm reading also that the second construction is often paired up with temporal adverbs like 今まで and これから.

I've been mining new kanji for the past year rather than going out of my way to study some. I'm wondering if I should just do the 3rd volume of Remembering the Kanji at this point. You just need to keep practicing. Reading isn't something that you will magically be able to do after studying grammar rules and kanji for X amount of time, it's a skill you have to develop like a muscle. In the beginning it is slow and painful because you have to constantly refer back to a dictionary and your grammar guide, but if you fight through it it will become easier over time.

With grammar, I don't think you should worry about trying to memorize rules out of a guide. The way you learn grammar is by reading or listening and seeing the rules being used correctly. As you encounter the same structures over and over again you begin to understand how they work and how to use them yourself.

Take a look at some of the later words in core6k and you will know why you can't read.

I have core10k, and the word for "search" (common computer term, pretty much required to use a program in Japanese) is word number 6300. At 20 words per day it would take a year if study to get there

You sort of have to mine your own words for doing anything specialized
Plus most people recommend getting 2000 words in your vocab before you start trying to really use the language.

Reading can be done from day 1 if you have a vocabulary list (like Yotsuba 1 and 2) or a texthooker for checking terms.

Babies learn that way. Do you think babies know what a て form is before they learn to ask for foods or toys to their parents?

Learning a language works like that - you focus on getting the message, not in grammar. Only after you have read/heard a good amount of structured sentences and started to get a knack of what they mean, you will actually profit from reading grammar.

That is not to say studying it first thing is a bad thing - it will just not fully prepare you for the groping in the dark - no guide will.

Studying vocabulary makes it faster to read (less texthooker usage or whatnot), that's a given, but you will still have to be in the dark for quite a while before your eyes start to adapt and you can make out forms in it.

So either suck it up and learn 6000 words before even starting to read, in order to do it somewhat more comfortably (I did it), or start doing it now and get faster results, as you seem to seek for. This will require more patience, but will allow you to consume media.

There is no need for you to toddle around with dirty diapers to utilize their "technique", you just have to go through the same bruteforce process for a few months. You already know the world and you already have a huge library of concepts in your mind, you just don't know how to say them in Japanese. Since some people don't know how to read I'll try and explain the process of learning.

First, you should have read Tae Kim or some equivalent grammar book, you don't need to memorize all the words or all the grammar. I started reading Yotsuba when I had about 500 words memorized in core2k/6k and I had to look up at least a word every single sentence, some times every word, most of the time a couple.

>If there are words you don't know, look them up (also put those suckers into your mining deck)
>If there are grammar structures you don't know, look them up in your grammar book or online
>Try and figure out what the sentence means
>If you aren't sure, try to compare to a translation or ask online
>Now read the sentence again
>Then keep doing this for all the other sentences in the chapter
>Once you finish the chapter, read it like 3 more times and try and find stuff you missed
>Move on to the next chapter

I'm not good at Japanese but this is a pretty fool proof method that even a monkey could do if a monkey could learn languages and read. If you are easily distracted like me I would recommend buying the physical manga off amazon.

Since China is one of the largest consumers of Japanese media, they also tend to have a lot of content hidden away in the Chinese interwebs.
A few search keywords:

A Google search for 「"混沌武士"+"日语字幕" zip」threw up multitudes of links to simplified Chinese and Taiwanese subs, as well as a few people asking is Japanese subs exist, so it really looks like you're flat out of luck in all regards for this series. Still, something to keep in mind if Kitsunekko fails you, as pretty much all of their Japanese subs were sources from Chinese subtitle sites. But hey, look on the bright side: if you ever want to learn Mandarin, they have subtitles for fucking everything.

That's what I was after, or at least words which list the variant kanji in online dictionaries. If words which aren't place names or personal names cannot be found, those kanji will be skipped and I won't bother trying to learn them. It's for a vocab deck and so the kanji are really only being learned in an indirect manner to begin with.
Those kanji in particular are the apparently the only kanji outside of the Non-Jouyou Kanji section which are missing. There are 350 表外漢字 present in the deck, but maybe that is more a statement to some of the limitations of the 常用漢字.

Looks like it. Oh well, won't bother with those kanji and pick up on names and place names as I come across them.
An alternative "Core10k" deck I put together 3161 total unique kanji and 9831 vocab entries. Now and then words are deleted during the review process for redundancy (like having both 近い and 近く, that sort of thing) as that was one of the reasons I dropped the Core decks. Pretty content with it as a passive vocab deck to grind away at on a daily basis.
