What if we made far larger constituencies, like 20 seats or something? I prefer if we get to choose who we put in ourselves rather than what the party wants in, sometimes I might like a candidate but not the party and vice versa. PR STV isn't particularly representative if you only have 3-5 seats per area, it would also mean you couldn't just get elected by campaigning in one area to fix the roads there. We keep having their powers taking over time, the old rates from before the 80's gave them a source of funding, now only commercial entites pay them, which meant they couldn't really do much. Then you have the government absorbing local entities and absorbing them into national entities like the HSE and Irish Water taking their powers, these aren't any better than if not worse than when they were more locally orgainised, even shit like splitting Dublin into four and removing the Limerick City council is fear that they might get more powerful. The problem with their limited powers also attracts incompentents as they're not responsible for anything, which leads to half of them collecting brown envelopes instead, if they had power they might have to put more competent people in to keep seats, but I'm having an idealised view. Again the parties put anyone up for election, and it's the incompetents who make it. Keep in mind these people also end up in the Dail.
