I think that the CT coast East of New Haven definitely compares to the best of the rest of coastal New England. I also had a friend from the "Quiet Corner" and visited his home a few times, and it was very idyllic.

When people talk about the differences between Massachusetts and the north it's not generally about the people or culture as (outside of Boston) they're very similar. Honestly, just apply to jobs.
I work at a nuke plant and we have a ton of UK transplants, so I imagine that a less regulated industry would be even easier to get into.
(You get the job first, and when you apply there is usually a box to check that says you'll need visa assistance. Not all that hard.)
