I think. I often see football players/ music artists from Southern USA that have obviously French last names yet don't appear to talk about it a lot. This applies for white and black people btw. Just today I learned one of my favorite artists' last name is Arceneaux but I doubt he speaks a word of French. In Louisiana they were beaten at school for speaking it. My Dad knows like... maybe 100 words in Lithuanian. I never met my grandparents on his side because they died in their 50s from cancer and a rare heart condition.

My grandparents from my mothers side (French and Irish) ... well my grandmother speaks French fluently. My mother can't speak it but my sister studied it in highschool/college and speaks it utterly natively. The Paresian French that we sometimes hang out with say they cannot detect any American accent with her. Both of my nephews speak it natively and my brother in law is conversational.

Obviously my grandfather has a heavy Irish accent. He's a madman though, a physicist and a VERY mean person.
