Now they have split into Croatian and Serbian kingdoms/principalities. Some of them become orthodox christian and adopt Byzantine culture, some become catholic christian and adopt western European culture. Still equal.

Croatia stays mostly small and gets into a personal union with Hungary, Serbia is a short lived empire and gets conquered by the Ottoman Turks.

Austria now controls the region of Croatia and Vojvodina (modern day northern Serbia) whilst the Turks control Serbia. Austria is far richer than the Turks and Croats and Austrians are both catholic so the Austrians build and develop Croatian land. The Turks despise the Serbs and the Serbs despise the Turks, so mostly nothing is done.

Serbia is independent and Croatia is still under the rule of Austria. WW1 ends and now Croatia and Serbia are united for the first time in history. The new kingdom is named Yugoslavia, and the ruler is a Serb. But, because the Austrians developed Croatian land, the Croats and Slovenes are still much more educated.

WW2 ends and now Yugoslavia is a socialist dictatorship (but not under the Soviet union). Some people say that Tito developed mostly Croatian and Slovenian lands and created countries such as Bosnia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo, making the Yugoslavs divided.

Yugoslav civil war ends, Serbia doesn't suffer much. Kosovo war ends and Serbia does suffer a lot from this, as Montenegro leaves Serbia and Kosovo is pretty much independent.

Today, Croatia has sea access, is in the EU and does not have many ethnic minorities. Serbia is not in the EU, has various ethnic minorities and does not have sea access.

In the state that the two countries are in right now, Serbia most likely will never be as well developed and rich as Croatia.
