like changed to pinyin? That was the original intention. However due to low popularity it was scrapped, even the 2nd batch of simplifications did not make it.
Initially they wanted to:
Trad>simplified(1st batch, currently used)>2nd simplified>...>pinyin

Then it changed to Trad>simplified 1st batch> simplified 2nd batch(revised version)

and finally even that was scrapped due to conflicts between how words should be simplified.
