Eh that comic is pretty misleading. Americans have always been xenophobic. Even in the begininning you had lads like Benjamin Franklin writing that the Germans in Pennsylvania were going to displace the Anglo culture. He also wrote that only Anglos are the true white people, everyone else in Yurop was swarthy cock suckers.
Later on Americans were distrustful of Catholic European immigrants like the Irish and Italians. The fear that Papists were going to hand over the United States to the pope was a real fear.
IIRC the first hanging involving immigrants came from Italian immigrants.
