Imagine if you applied that same mentality with a company like Kodak. Just because Kodak failed, doesn't mean that suddenly the US is ded. It's literally just one company.

Sure, Japan's glory days of the 1980's are long gone, and Japan faces many challenges for the future. But fact remains that Japan has still mostly been able to sustain slight growth for the past few years, still has one of the largest economies in the world (even on a per capita basis, it's still competitive with Western European countries), still has a very good HDI, very low poverty and unemployment, still dominates many technological areas (including creation of new patents), has arguably the world's best infrastructure, and despite Trump being president is still buddy-buddy with the world's leading superpower.

The US has been the only super power since the fall of the USSR and prior to that the the USSR and USA were the only superpowers since the end of WWII. Show me how Japan left international relations and pushed around other countries across the world. Their money isn't anywhere as relevant as the dollar or even the euro. They have no real military or any ability to project force beyond their borders or ability to threaten other nations with military reprisal. They are an important regional power, but certainly not a super power.
