The problem with trying to assimilate into German culture is, that modern day Germany has no culture.
How do you get to know German food, when even germans don't eat in german restaurants (gute deutsche Küche existiert nicht).
Even Germans would rather eat foreign food.
There is no German popular music apart from horrendous shit.
I am not a fan of Russian music, but at least it's not as horrible as the shit that people (don't) listen to here.
Germans live isolated.
In our neighborhood all the Russians are easy going, know each other, and drink together. (they are actually scum)
For Germans this behavior is rare.
One german family even has ridiculously huge fence, just so they don't have to see anyone.
Naturally there are exceptions, but this is the general trend of things.

It is sort of a weird dynamic there. They'd rather keep to themselves, but I don't blame them for not wanting to associate with neighbourhoods of Russians and Turks. Because they want to see themselves as still being "tolerant", they'll let the migrants come in and do their own thing. That just often leads to ghettos.

In terms of university...
Well, a German friend of mine (from a not so big university) who studies English was taught how the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was really about a man repressing his homosexuality.

Another friend, who studies poli sci, learned about how the patriarchal US trying to distract the world with its nuclear testing and oppression of indigenous islanders, so they came up with a piece of swimwear named after the location they did their testing. Hence we have the bikini.
