The USSR was a shithole. I saw a soviet citizen come to the UK and cry at the supermarket. He couldn't understand seeing so much food. He packed all the meat in the trolly because he thought it was meat day. Someone told him that meat is always in the supermarket, there are no meat days.

The only good thing about the USSR was free housing for newlyweds. Everything else was along the lines of today's North Korea. This is exactly what would have become of the USSR had it not collapsed.

The Soviets should have just changed their economic model to a more capitalist system and kept the authoritarian social laws in place. Then they could have crushed rebellions in the eastern bloc and would be an economic powerhouse

The whole point of the soviet experiment was to be able to put in effect some kind of class equality. They failed, considering that they needed dictators to do so, but even the rudimentary class and social equality that they achieved would be lost if they went capitalist like China.
