What does whale meat taste like? I butchered chicken and goose back in the day. A lot of times, when I'm finished scrubbing up and digging the bits of intestine out from my fingernails, I don't have much appetite for red meat.

What economic pressures fuel this practice? Whale meat isn't widely eaten in Japan (seemingly), is it an expensive delicacy or something, enough money in it to make people hunt them? Does tradition play a factor in fueling it? Just wondering what they're even used for, perhaps certain components of the whale are the delicacy and most of it is discarded (or sold cheaply)?

Whale oil used to be very valuable, for lubricant, soap, fuel etc. Banned now and we have better alternatives.

Its this sort of intestinal lining/slurry, its very valuable, it is used in creating certain perfumes and fragrances, the rarity has only driven up the price but a small chunk of ambergris can go a long way.

They are endangered and still havent recovered their populations to good levels, bar a few species.
They are also big, intelligent and peaceful mammals and people tend to feel worse about killing those, its like killing an elephant.
