In the US, at least, people looking to carry on a conversation will talk about anything immediately obvious in order to have something to talk about, usually the weather or something similarly boring. Minorities don't really like when people bring up stupid misconceptions about their race/ethnicity or comment on it at all, but height height isn't considered socially unacceptable to bring up unless the person is short.
