I know a bit of the history, that should shed some light.

During the Greater East-Asia War, the Republic of China (KMT) and the Empire of Japan were at war. The KMT got really butthurt about how much they lost against 'dwarf people' and developed a deep, racial resentment towards Japanese.

After the Greater East-Asian War, the United States, on the side of the KMT, took Taiwan from Japan and gave it to the KMT.
Taiwanese did indeed prospure under Japanese rule. However, as you can imagine, the KMT being in control of the government (therefor education), began to teach only negative things about the Japanese.

So what you have is the natives of Taiwan really like Japan but the KMT immigrants, that fled Mainland China when they lost to the Communists, really hate Japan.
But then, the Taiwanese native also really hate the KMT because February 28 Incident.

It needs to become Dutch again.
