I left India back at the beginning of December. Demonitization was an absolute mess - I could hardly find cash to line my pockets from the first week of November until my flight back home. ATM lines in Delhi and Jaipur stretched around entire blocks, with the reserve often running out several times within the space of an hour.

Meanwhile, businesses which had hoarded so-called "black money" were sending their employees out en masse with old currency to exchange at banks.

I don't know whether the program is going to be a long-term success, but it seems to have inconvenienced many poor people in the short-term.

I also can't believe there's now a fucking law which requires that people stand for the Indian national anthem in movie theaters. That's some straight-up bullshit. I didn't like having to stand for the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance when I was boy, so I can hardly contemplate having to stand for Jana Gana Mana in a theater. Even if I'd have done so anyway, out of respect, it's fucking ridiculous that the government codified it.

I found people would usually offer to let me cut in line in smaller cities like Jaipur. In Delhi, concessions were rarely made for foreigners.

Shit was miserable, though. I came down with an awful sickness right when demonitization began and had to spend all of what I had on a doctor visit. I'm very lucky to have lots of friends in India, because I'd have been penniless and without one rupee for food or water.
