The first mentions of Albanians in Albania coincide with the Bulgarian Empire conquering the Albanian coast in the 10th century. Bulgarians must have settled them out as border guards.

Also the geographic nucleus of the albanians is considered to be the Shkumbin river, which just so happens to be located right in the middle of the area that Bulgaria conquered.
