Russian is unsefull in eastern europe. My russian friends can understand all kind of other slav languages.
Standart german is only used in germany, Switzerland and Austrians have their own dialects. They will understand you, but especially the people in switzerland are pissed if you don't even try to speak their maymay dialect.
