Do Canadians think of themselves as American?

Canadians are Americans in denial.

We think of ourselves as British, because that's pretty much what we are.

Your country was born of rebellion against the values we fought to keep. How can you claim to not be the "in denial" ones?

Yes but better in every way

In all honesty Canadians have this really odd and undeserved pretentious world view of themselves that they are somehow better than Americans seemingly stemming from the fact that they aren't as prone to as many negative stereotypes.

It's really fucking weird and I never understood how so many of them could unironically believe it without realizing the irony of it all.
>>
>>72944191
Thank you so much. I totally agree. I'm not even memeing, this is my true, honest feeling that I get dealing with Canadians in real life.

I still remember awhile ago when I was going to Iceland I took some odd connection flight in Canada, I was like 11 or something and I asked my Dad "where are we?"

Then some, apparently Canadian guy, said very loudly "THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!!"

I was taken aback...

At least we can somewhat justify it and it isn't stipulated on the fact that we aren't as bad as our neighbors

To be fair, Canadians ARE better than you guys. It's like America sans the complete cultural cesspools that are the South and the Corn Belt.
>>
>>72944191
Statistically speaking, Canadians are far more patriotic than Americans. It's a bizarre mild-mannered centrist nationalism that probably doesn't exist in any other country on the planet.

I've been Canucksplained to far too many times to count at this point. I was talking about the side-effects of trade liberalization with somebody once (a left-wing point of criticism) and a random Canadian in the room felt the need to pipe up and say, "Well, in Canada 'liberal' isn't a dirty word to us :-)" as though he were dropping a knowledge bomb on us rubes. This is the mindset that governs so many interactions with them
>>

Thanks New Zealand.

I think Americans are just mad, because wherever they go, they cause a mess and a loud ruckus. It's inherit of their people and they can't escape it, so they just shift blame on to others, as they always do.

>>
>>72944672
Justifying a pretentious view of ourselves? The US world view stems from the fact that we think we are the best, whereas the Canadian world view seems to stem from the fact that they think they're more tolerable than Americans. This is my experience at least.

>>
It's really hard to put into words what a Canadian identity is, besides the whole "cultural mosaic" crap.

I suppose it changes where you live, especially in Quebec, Maritimies, etc, but the best way I can put it is by saying it was the feeling I got when I drove to Sudbury to visit family. You ride for six hours through forest until you reach a tiny town where you buy food, and you go out to the cottage to get firewood, make some homemade gravy and meats, you sing log drivers waltz while you drink beers and then go inside to watch the Leafs lose another fucking game. I suppose it's similar to a lot of rural states, especially stuff like Montana, Dakota and others, but it's something that I'd like to associate with my national identity.

The American Identity never really got over the whole Manifest Destiny thing, so anything remotely related to American is American by default. Of course we don't have to deal with the massive social and political upheaval going on in the American political and sociological scene, so we'll see how identities diverge or form in the next decade

For the past 150 years there has been absolutely noone that could defeat America
You could takeover North America right now and nobody could do anything about it
>>
Americans are so subconsciously insecure about the flaws and hipocrisy in the social and political fabric of their country that they attack the legitimacy of literally every other ethnic group around the world (see. Europoors, Fucking Leaf, Mexicans, etc.) instead of confronting these issues and acknowledging they exist. The Canadian identity's separation from the American one is primarily political and national.

My impression of Canada is that it's almost exactly the same as the US but I live and have spent most of my life in Northern New England. Perhaps it's because I live in the part of the United States that is practically Canada.

It's always been a common part of posting etiquette since long before you started leaving your ebaumsworld.

>>72945608
Not necessarily, it's more common when people post on phones or with 4chanX which has a small quick-reply window. It makes a couple of lines appear to be a long post, prompting users to split their posts into paragraphs for ease of reading. If you're reading posts on a phone screen, this paragraph may appear unreasonably long. On the desktop website, of course, it is a reasonable length.

Quite literally a matter of taste, but my taste is objectively superior to yours.

Thanks

But honestly though, this amount of shitflinging between Canada and America is something I only see on this site and people from it. I'm sure it's just a healthy case of bantz, most decent people on both sides of the border wouldn't care if you're from either. Both countries are so large that generalizing either to a set of stereotypes and viewpoints is disingenuous, bit I guess it must be done for the sake of sick memes.
